Nebraska Baseball Picks Up Big Win At Minnesota, 5-3

Jake Meyers big night leads Huskers to victory

After dropping three of their four past contests, the Nebraska Baseball team went on the road and picked up a big conference road win at Minnesota. The Huskers who came back after falling in a 3-1 hole, received 7 innings from Jake Hohensee in the win. Jake Meyers led the offense, gathering four hits, driving in a pair and scoring a pair of runs himself.

Meyers was a one man wrecking crew in the first against Minnesota starter Lucas Gilbreath. Meyers started the game with a single, and moved to third on a pair of stolen bases. Luis Alvarado would drive Meyers in with a sacrifice fly to give the Huskers an early lead.

Minnesota would then tie the game in the second when Matt Stemper doubled to start the inning and then scored on a pair of ground ball outs.

In the third inning, the Gophers got a two run home run from Terrin Vavra to take a 3-1 lead.

Nebraska would pull even with Minnesota in the fifth, when they broke through against Gilbreath. The Huskers would load the bases after an Alex Raburn double, a Jesse Wilkening walk, and a Jake Schleppenbach hit by pitch. Meyers would come through again, lacing a game tying single to right center. The Huskers would put the contact play on with Angelo Altavilla who would send a ball back to Gilbreath who threw home to get Schleppenbach at the dish to prevent Nebraska from taking a lead.

After Hohensee settled into a grove in the sixth and seventh, Nebraska retook the lead in the eighth. Meyers and Altavilla singled to start the inning, before close Brian Glowicki came in to face Scott Schreiber. Schreiber and Ben Miller would both single to score Meyers and Altavilla and put the Huskers back in front.

After Jake McSteen came in for the eighth inning and shut down the Gophers, Alvarado would come in with a runner on and one out in the ninth. Alvarado got a pop up and a grounder to end the game.

Nebraska moves to 22-14 (6-3-1) on the year with the win. Minnesota drops to 22-11 (7-3) with the loss. Nebraska now moves to within a half game of the Gophers in the Big Ten standings. Nebraska and Minnesota resume their series Saturday afternoon with first pitch set for 3:00 PM.
