Big first Inning propels Huskers to Tuesday night victory

Behind a six run first inning, the Nebraska Baseball team defeated the Kansas State Wildcats 11-1. Nebraska used five arms out of the bullpen to combine for the three hit victory.

After Matt Waldron set down the Wildcats in order, Nebraska sent 10 men to the plate, chasing starting pitcher Caleb Littlejim after just five batters. Littlejim walked Mojo Hagge, Angelo Altavilla, and Jake Meyers to load the bases. After hitting Scott Schreiber, Littlejim gave up a single to Ben Miller to bring his night to a close. Relief pitcher Kasey Ford gave up a base hit to Luis Alvarado to stretch the Husker lead to 3-0. Ford got the next to batters to strikeout and pop up to bring up Jake Schleppenbach who doubled into the gap in right to clear the bases.

After a quiet three innings from Waldron, Reece Eddins could come in and pitch into the sixth inning. Eddins would be responsible for a run, when he walked Josh Either who would advance to second on a wild pitch, and score on a fielders choice.

Nebraska would respond in their half of the sixth with two runs of their own. Jesse Wilkening would score when he walked, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Hagge base hit. Hagge would score on a wild pitch after an Altavilla wild pitch and single put him on third.

While the Nebraska offense was breaking out, Chad Luensmann got some work in out of the bullpen. Luensmann was effective putting up two innings of scoreless work. Ethan Frazier came in and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Huskers as well.

After adding a single tally on a walk, fielders choice, single, error, and groundball in the seventh inning, Nebraska tacked on two more in the eighth inning. Altavilla doubled, and moved to third on a single and scored on a double play to push the lead to 10-1. Luke Roskam then added the Huskers fourth long ball of the year to close out the scoring.

Nebraska now moves to 13-10 on the season, and travels to Bloomington this weekend to take on the Indiana Hoosiers for their first Big Ten conference series. Nebraska and Indiana will matchup Friday for the series opener at 6:05.
