The Jacksonville Jaguars are set to square off with the Washington Redskins on Sunday afternoon as this unbelievably disappointing season nears its end.

The Jags and Redskins are remarkably on the same trajectory this season, but have gotten there in different ways. After a 3-1 start, Jacksonville imploded. After a 6-3 start, Washington lost its starting quarterback in Alex Smith to a brutal injury, and the team has now dropped four straight.

The two franchises aren’t very familiar with each other, but Washington has dominated the all-time series. Let’s recap the history.

Interesting takeaway: Washington is one of only three franchises the Jaguars have just one single win against, with the Minnesota Vikings and St.Louis/Los Angeles Rams being the other two (Jacksonville has one regular season win against the New England Patriots, but also has a playoff win for a total of two).

Quick thoughts: This series has been all Redskins. Washington has won five of the six all-time meetings and has outscored Jacksonville 163-111 (27.2 points per game vs. 18.5 points per game). The Skins have also won two of the three meetings in Jacksonville, while the Jags have never won in Landover, Maryland where Washington plays its home games. The lone win for the Jaguars came in 2002, which was Tom Coughlin’s final season as head coach.

Quick recap: This was the second game of the 2014 season, and Chad Henne was unspectacular completing 14 of 28 passes for 193 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was also sacked 10 times. It’s worth noting that this was Henne’s last game as the full-time starter for the Jags. He drew the start the following game against the Indianapolis Colts, but Blake Bortles made his debut and took over the reins. Back to the game at hand, though, Kirk Cousins tore up Jacksonville, completing 22 of 33 passes for 250 yards, two touchdowns and no picks. Alfred Morris added 85 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Not helping matters was the fact that the front office actually thought Toby Gerhart was an NFL-caliber running back. He had seven carries for eight yards in this game. This one was ugly, but Gus Bradley era, you know?

Quick recap: This game was a lot more competitive than the one previously mentioned, and was back and forth all game, which eventually led to overtime. The Redskins jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, before Jacksonville scored 10 unanswered points itself. Washington got the go ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter, which David Garrard answered with a 20-yard touchdown run with 2:44 left on the clock. The Jags actually won the overtime coin toss, but Garrard threw a costly interception which was returned eight yards and gave Washington the ball at Jacksonville’s 14-yard line. After a couple of handoffs, Graham Gano kicked the game-winning field goal for the Redskins. The Jaguars lost to Rex Grossman and Jacksonville’s playoff chances took a serious hit (the team lost the next game to finish 8-8 and miss playoffs).

Quick thoughts: Not a whole lot of analysis needed here. The Redskins have dominated the Jaguars no matter the decade.

This week’s matchup is just the seventh all-time meeting between the two franchises. Both teams are crashing and burning right now, but the Redskins are forced to start Josh Johnson, who was signed out of the Alliance of American Football League as a backup to Mark Sanchez, but will now play over Sanchez who struggled last week. Johnson literally had to play Madden 2019 to acquaint himself with his teammates. While the Jaguars have had many struggles, an inexperienced quarterback recently out of the NFL would probably rather not face a secondary boasting Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye. It’s not often at this point the Jaguars deserve to be big favorites in a game, but this week is one of those occurrences.

So, will the Jaguars actually win a game? Do we even want them to win at this point? Draft position aside, I am never for teams going out there and not competing. Go Jags.
