What now with Trevor Siemian?

Trevor’s time in Denver may be up. Here’s how he graded out in 2017.

Today we continue our Broncos 2017 roster breakdown series with quarterback Trevor Siemian.

After being drafted in the 7th round, 250th overall, out of Northwestern in 2015, there were no expectations of Trevor Siemian. Very few raised an eyebrow when Trevor ousted incumbent 3rd stringer Zac Dysert in training camp during his rookie year.

In the preseason of the 2016 season, Trevor held off newcomers Paxton Lynch and Mark Sanchez and suddenly found himself the starting quarterback of the Denver Broncos. Despite a lingering shoulder injury, Siemian managed to start 14 games. However, fans grew frustrated with pedestrian performance.

In 2017, fans were hopeful that Paxton Lynch would finally take the reins of the quarterback position. After sub-par play from Lynch and a preseason injury, Siemian once again found himself marshaling the Denver Broncos to open the season. In the first 7 games, Siemian’s uninspired play was much worse than the 4-3 record he ‘achieved’ before getting benched. In week 11, Siemian returned to the starting role for the next 3 games. In week 15 against the Indianapolis Colts, Siemian’s season ended at the end of the first quarter when he suffered a partial shoulder dislocation and was placed on Injured Reserve.

Trevor Siemian PFF Grade

According to Pro Football Focus, Siemian graded out with an overall 53.2 (out of 100) grade, a 50.7 in the passing game, and 77.4 in the run game.

Trevor Siemian Contract

If you were to look at Paxton Lynch and Siemian in a vacuum of contract space, the likeliest cut would be Siemian as he has nominal dead money.

2018 Status

So, what now with Trevor Siemian?

Reports came out Wednesday that the Broncos are already looking to trade Trevor away.

It should come as no surprise that Trevor Siemian is not in the long-term plans of the Denver Broncos. The quarterback position is going to look vastly different in 2018 and that change begins and ends with Siemain. Before Wednesday, I would have said there was an outside chance that Trevor could linger as a backup, mostly because his contract is as inexpensive as it is, but it’s clear that Trevor’s time in Denver is drawing to an unceremonious close. Frankly, the unknown talents of Chad Kelly are a better prospect at this point.
