John Elway has shown he can make bold moves, just not when it comes to QBs. They only make the fog in the situation even thicker.

If John Elway wanted to lift the fog on his quarterback situation, he only made it thicker.

When you zoom in on where the Denver Broncos sit, it makes total sense. There was no way Elway and the Broncos would go with Kyle Sloter as the backup quarterback. I get the craze with third-string quarterbacks with this fanbase, but come on. We have reached levels of unadulterated absurdness.

That’s what allowed Denver to bring back Brock Osweiler. As I said on Twitter, life always comes full circle, but no one saw this circle coming.

“I will say this: Kyle Sloter did a helluva job in the preseason and had a helluva camp,” Elway told the media on Saturday night. “As I told him today when I talked to him, I said, ‘You don’t know this but I’m telling you from experience going from the preseason to the regular season is a big jump.’ We didn’t want to put him in that situation. Having been through that before and not having much success doing it very well myself my rookie year, we told Kyle that we’re going to release him and then we brought Brock in.”

When you look at the Broncos quarterback situation from that vantage point, it makes total sense. Add to it Elway was able to get Osweiler for pennies compared to what he was offered a year-and-a-half ago, and it makes even more sense. Osweiler also has worked with Mike McCoy before, and had success with most of the guys on Denver’s offense. One could make the argument he’s done more than the current starter, but that’s for a different day.

When you zoom out and look through a more broad lens, this move to bring in Osweiler adds more questions than answers. Instead of two quarterbacks who need reps and experience, they now have three. This move does nothing to solve the longterm situation for the Broncos. Not to mention, what do Elway, Vance Joseph and the organization do when Paxton Lynch is healthy? Again, instead of two quarterbacks who need reps, you have three.

Why not go for the rare quadruple quarterback confusion score and bring in Colin Kaepernick? I said on the Mile High Report Radio Podcast that we’re living in the freaky, alternate universe of “Stranger Things,” better know as the “upside down.” If this isn’t the upside down, I don’t want to know what the upside down is.

At some point, Elway and the Broncos need to make a damn choice, live with it and move on. Put the entire faith and trust of the organization behind one of these three and stand by that decision — through the good and bad. This constant competition bullshit is great for national attention but the team is no better off now than it was a year ago. Only you have the guy Denver originally wanted but left in dramatic fashion now somehow back in the fold.
