OTA’s Day 1: Siemian controlled, accurate; Lynch aggressive

There was some quality reporting on the quarterbacks in Andrew Mason’s Day 1 OTA report.

The Denver Broncos held their first OTA’s on the field practice yesterday. The big news was both Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch getting first team reps, although, Siemian got the lion’s share of the work in on Tuesday.

Andrew Mason of DenverBroncos.com broke down the entire day of practice rather well, with some excellent analysis of each quarterback’s performance.

After a botched center-quarterback exchange on the first play of the initial team period, Siemian completed his first Pass of the day, finding Demaryius Thomas on a short pass across the middle, and he continued from there. Siemian's next pass, in a seven-on-seven period, saw him thread the needle on a pass to tight end Jeff Heuerman that beat two defenders.

At one point, Siemian completed six consecutive passes as he found a groove, showing steadiness while making good decisions. Siemian's passes had plenty of zip, including one during a team period to Emmanuel Sanders.

From the way Mason describes Siemian’s practice, he came out confident and very controlled. He was accurate and on target all day long.

Lynch, on the other hand, had an up and down day. However, the ups were really up and the downs were really down. Seems to be his game right now.

Paxton Lynch was up second. He settled down after struggling early. His first pass during the initial team period was nearly intercepted by safety Justin Simmons. Lynch completed his next pass but then struggled during the subsequent seven-on-seven period, as he followed a completion to Virgil Green with an errant pass that was intercepted by a diving Brandon Marshall.

But during a later seven-on-seven period, Lynch completed all four of his passes with the assistance of wide receiver Jordan Taylor, who went low to snag a pass just above the grass.

In the final team period, Lynch rebounded after misfiring on an attempt to Marlon Brown with perhaps his best pass of the day -- a downfield strike to tight end Steven Scheu that saw him place the ball perfectly past two defenders. It was the kind of pass Lynch didn't often make last year, and served as a sign of his progress.

That slow start appeared to end with a giant bang as Lynch aggressively attacked down the field, with some great precision throws that Mason noted simply wasn’t there last season.

Overall, both reports are promising. If Siemian and Lynch can push each other, then we could see them both grow during this competition. The winner will ultimately be a better quarterback for it.

Today, it will be Lynch’s turn to start with the first team. He will get a chance to offer up a faster start than the one he had on Tuesday. Siemian will get more work with the second team, which will be going up against the No Fly Zone and that first team defense.

The Broncos website also has some great photos from Day 1 of OTA’s. Take a look. Mason also had notes on everything else from Day 1 of OTA’s - definitely worth the extended read.
