Giants had league’s worst special teams units last year

Thomas McGaughey becoming special Teams Coach for the New York Giants has apparently moved from the “expected” stage to becoming a done deal. NJ Advance Media is reporting that Mcgaughey has finalized a deal to replace Tom Quinn.

McGaughey was recently let go as special teams coordinator of the Carolina Panthers. He was assistant special teams coach with the Giants from 2007-2010, under Quinn. He has run his own special teams units at LSU, with the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers and Panthers.

McGaughey has never worked with new head coach Pat Shurmur. He is, however, familiar to GM Dave Gettleman. They were together both with the Giants and Panthers.

McGaughey will be taking over a special teams unit that was the worst in the NFL last season.

While scouting 2018 NFL Draft prospects at the Senior Bowl, Shurmur has been busy trying to fill out his staff of assistant coaches. James Bettcher is expected to become defensive coordinator and Tyke Tolbert is reportedly going to become wide receivers coach.
