McAdoo Conference Call - Odell Beckham “Has An Ankle”

Updating the Giants injury situation and the coach’s takes on the team’s performance.

New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo’s Tuesday conference call with the Giants beat writers has been hotly anticipated.

There was plenty in the second preseason game about which reporters could ask McAdoo. The first was, obviously, for an update on star receiver Odell Beckham Jr.’s injury situation — as well as those of WRs Brandon Marshall and Tavarres King, as well as CB Michael Hunter.

There was also a strong defensive performance to ask about as well as a concerning offensive performance.

But first, lets get to the important part.

Odell Beckham, And Other Injuries, Update

Offense

The Giants’ offense struggled once again, managing just a pair of field goals, and didn’t even appear to play that well. The team set out with an intent to establish the run, but they largely failed to move the ball on the ground. The obvious culprit was the run blocking, but McAdoo also said that the running backs need to be more precise behind the line of scrimmage.

The big concern about the Giants’ offense is the offensive line, particularly with regards to pass protection.

This is technically true. After giving up three sacks in the first game, the starting offensive line gave up one in this game.

Quarterback Eli Manning was a bright spot on the offense, completing ten of fourteen passing attempts in his 26 snaps. McAdoo mentioned after the game that Manning and Brandon Marshall needed to connect on the third down pass that went through Marshall’s hands. Tuesday he pointed out another pass that he thinks Manning should have completed.

Defense

While the offense was ripe for critisim, there wasn’t much to criticize on the defensive size. On the contrary, McAdoo was quick to praise the work of Olivier Vernon who had a pass defensed after covering tight end David Njoku deep down the field.

One notable aspect that took some people by surprise was Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie playing free safety. It’s a position he played at times in 2016, but he didn’t flash like he did Monday night.
