90-Man Roster Preview: Does WR Keeon Johnson Have A Chance?

In a crowded Wide Receiver field, his chances appear slim

Sometimes the NFL is simply a numbers game. No matter what a player shows in practice or preseason there simply isn’t room for him. Could that be the case for New York Giants undrafted free agent wide receiver Keeon Johnson?

Let’s take a closer look at Johnson as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man roster.

2016 Season In Review

Johnson had 49 receptions for 476 yards (9.7 yards per catch) and three touchdowns for the Virginia Cavaliers. His previous career-high had been 20 during his freshman year.

Johnson admitted that he perhaps did not work as hard as he should have after his freshman season:

"After my first year, I kind of didn't grind as hard as I should have and I kind of got complacent and things like that," Johnson said. "That can always come back and bite you in the end. That's one thing I learned from it."

2017 Season Outlook

Johnson, listed at 6-foot-2, 211 pounds, faces an uphill battle to even earn a spot on the Giants’ Practice Squad. After Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard and Brandon Marshall, the Giants have Tavarres King, Dwayne Harris, Roger Lewis Jr., Darius Powe and Travis Rudolph. That’s already eight players for a likely maximum of six spots, with Powe, Lewis and Rudolph all eligible for the practice squad. Speedster Kevin Snead, a guy the Giants have admitted is a project, could also be a practice squad possibility.

Can Johnson force his way into that picture? It certainly won’t be easy.
