Let’s check the mail and see what questions we can answer this week

This was a busy week for the New York Giants, with the releases of wide receiver Victor Cruz and running back Rashad Jennings at the forefront. Let’s catch up on reading the mail and see what’s on your mind.

Ed says: Honestly, right now I would think all three are on the table. If you can find a receiver, preferably a big-bodied one, at a decent price in free agency I can see that move. I haven’t studied the wide receivers in depth yet, but if the Giants find one in the middle rounds they like, why not? As for internal options, we looked at these earlier in the week. I would think Roger Lewis Jr., Tavarres King and Darius Powe all get a look.

Ed says: As I indicated in the previous answer, I haven’t studied the receivers enough yet. One intriguing name is Mack Hollins of North Carolina, 6-foot-4, 210 pounds with speed and excellent special teams ability that will appeal to teams. You always need your middle- to late-round players to be able to contribute on special teams. What really piqued my interest, though, is the comment about Michael Thomas. I was a big proponent of the Giants going after the 6-3, 212-pound Thomas a year ago. I love Shepard, too, but Thomas had a better year (92 catches, 1,137 yards) to 65 catches, 683 yards for Shepard. His size would also have been helpful to the Giants.

Nathanael Crisciuolo asks (via e-mail): Going into the offseason the Giants carry some older mediocre line backers on their team, whats the plan going forward in the offseason or targets in the draft?

Ed says: I’m not sure we know exactly what the plan is, but I think we have an idea. The Giants seem likely to push hard to bring back Keenan Robinson. They also seem likely to let Kelvin Sheppard go and give B.J. Goodson an opportunity. Also, someday Mark Herzlich will no longer be a Giant. As for the draft, depending on how things go in free agency perhaps Zach Cunningham of Vanderbilt (a favorite of mine) and Haason Reddick of Temple could be in play at No. 23.

Ed says: I don’t know that one is more important than the other. I think the Giants have to do something about the offensive line, even if that something is adding talent to the right side and — though I know some fans will scream — leaving Ereck Flowers at left tackle. As for Jason Pierre-Paul, I might be wrong and Giants fans will hope that I am, but I think fans need to brace for Pierre-Paul to leave. The Giants are not expected to use the franchise tag, and if JPP hits the open market it’s almost certain someone will outbid the Giants. And there seems to be agreement that Pierre-Paul will sign with the highest bidder.
