The Philadelphia Eagles turned down a trade offer made by the Cleveland Browns for Nick Foles earlier this offseason, according to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Silver.
Silver says the Browns were offering pick No. 35 overall in exchange for the 2018 Super Bowl MVP back in March. Foles’ desire to remain in Philly was reportedly part of the reason the Eagles decided to keep him.
Before rejecting the deal, two sources said, the Eagles ran the scenario by Foles, who said he preferred to remain in Philadelphia.
It’s not unreasonable that the Eagles were willing to weigh the opinion of the person who had a significant role in them winning their first Super Bowl franchise history.
It’s also not crazy to think the Eagles were hesitant to trade Foles given that Carson Wentz is recovering from an ACL/LCL injury that occurred on December 10.
With that said, turning down pick No. 35 for a player who ideally won’t play at all this year and will definitely be gone after this season isn’t exactly a no-brainer. The Eagles could’ve really used that selection, especially when they were already so light on picks in the 2018 NFL Draft.
If the Eagles went through with the deal, these notable players would’ve been available to them: Nick Chubb, Ronald Jones, James Daniels, Courtland Sutton, Harold Landry, Mike Gesicki, Dante Pettis, Josh Jackson, and Christian Kirk.
Ultimately, the trade didn’t happen. And the Eagles rewarded Foles with a reworked contract.
That doesn’t mean the Eagles still can’t trade Foles. It’s possible another team comes calling in an emergency situation like the Vikings found themselves in when they traded for Sam Bradford back in 2016.
If that trade doesn’t materialize, Foles will spend the 2018 season as Carson Wentz’s backup before likely leaving in free agency next year. Philadelphia might be able to get a compensatory pick if he signs a big deal somewhere but that wouldn’t arrive until the 2020 NFL Draft. And it would be a late third-round pick, at best.
