Diamond Dawgs appear to be peaking at right time

The baseball season has its hills and valleys, those times of highs and lows.

In the end, the goal is to just in time for the postseason, be playing your best baseball.

That is exactly what Georgia is doing right now, and the timing could not be much better.

After a thrilling Series win over the weekend against sixth-ranked ranked Arkansas, combined with taking a game last weekend against Florida, Georgia has won four of six, each win coming against teams within the top ten.

Georgia enters the SEC tournament as the third seed (the pitching arms are most grateful). Most importantly, it has a first-round bye for the first time since 2008’s College World Series runner-up finish.

The Bulldogs play at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday against either Vanderbilt or Texas A&M. They don’t exactly need to win the whole thing earn a national seed, but playing well would not only keep momentum going and also cement a spot for a team that as of now, looks good to host a regional.

In truth, the best thing to happen to Georgia this weekend was the weather.

Unless you’ve been entranced with the Britons having a notable event early Saturday morning, rain has kind of been an issue here recently.

After losing Thursday’s series opener 8-6, a game in which the bullpen was ripped for six runs, this team needed a chance to redeem itself. Luckily, the weather cooperated.

On Friday night, a thrilling 8-7 win evened the series on LJ Talley’s single to score Keegan Mcgovern. As thrilling as those heroics were, the win also showed off how much fight this team has.

In a weekend filled with a good share of runs from two of the top four offenses in the SEC, Arkansas started things off by ripping both Georgia starter Emerson Hancock and Zac Kristofak for six runs over three innings. The Bulldogs bullpen bounced back from the night before combining to allow just one run the rest of the way with Blake Cairnes pitching a single inning before CJ Smith and Aaron Schunk pitched the rest of the way.

Friday was a late one at Foley Field thanks to a two-hour weather delay - forcing both teams to turn around and play the scheduled series finale at Noon on Saturday.

Quick turnarounds are the norm at times in the postseason. If this team is to make a push for Omaha, it’ll have to adapt to the not as expected settings and scenarios.

The Diamond Dawgs thrived in it on Saturday, getting clutch hits, strong pitching...and reminding that Keegan McGovern has an outright cannon in left field.

“DON”T DO IT, SHANE!! THINK OF YOUR FANS!!!”

If this team had to scratch and claw to beat an also-ran last weekend, it would be easy to shrug off. But to do so against a team also in the conversation for a national seed? It speaks volumes about the Diamond Dawgs chances of making a run toward Omaha.
