Diamond Dawgs Get Chance To Prove Mettle On Big Stage

These are unfamiliar times for the Georgia baseball program, well at least since around 2011.

In the past cluster of years, May has been marked by hoping that the Diamond Dawgs can get red, red hot in a hurry and scrape into a NCAA regional, one that they had little chance of winning, at that.

Not this year.

This Weekend, Georgia gets its chance on a big stage against No. 1 Florida. Obviously, a series win would be icing on the cake, but the bigger key is to play well and not get embarrassed. That was the case last night. Georgia made a very good showing of itself Friday, rallying twice to lead in the ninth before a pair of Florida runs claimed the 7-6 win.

If Georgia does that through this weekend, it has a good chance of maintaining its current projection of not just being in the postseason, but being in a very good position during that time.

Georgia may have lost Friday, but it also showed, in an atmosphere that may as well been one that’ll be just like that one it’ll face in the postseason, that it’s a team to be reckoned with.

Going into the weekend, one projection had Georgia not only slated to host a regional, but a No. 4 national seed. It’s taken awhile, but the nation is finding out that an early season burst was no fluke in Athens.

After last night, Georgia is 15-10 against teams in arguably the country’s toughest conference, 16-8 against teams within the top 50 RPI rankings and 28-13 against RPI top 100 teams.

All told, with this weekend and next weekend at home against Arkansas, it’ll be all about postseason posturing for Georgia. A definite far cry from what’s been the norm in recent times at Foley Field.
