Andre Seldon has Committed to Michigan

Andre Seldon has Committed to Michigan Seth June 20th, 2018 at 2:28 PM

[Jeff Corrion/The D Zone]:

Via Perry Farrell of the Detroit Free Press, one of Evan Petzold's gut feelings is explained. It's 2020 CB/Slot Ninja prospect Andre Seldon Jr, and at least SOMEONE got the memo that giving bloggers a 30-minute heads up before they need a commit post on a slow news day will endear you to them:

Positives: anticipation, follow-through

Seldon camped at Michigan this week and Wiltfong said he ran a 4.3 there. The Belleville product is listed at 5'8"/140, but that is probably from his sophomore season roster and 15-year-olds tend to grow some. 247 lists him at 5'9"/160 and the 24th cornerback at this time. Steve Lorenz has an eval up that includes a take from Jourdan Lewis; ditto Allen Trieu.

In case Belleville wasn't your first clue, Seldon's been on radars for a long time. As an 8th grader he earned MVP of the DBs and fastest man honors at the youth camp of 2016 Sound Mind Sound Body (when Ace was watching Ambry Thomas and I was waiting around for Luigi Vilain). Kentucky offered even then.

While the strapping lads of this year's class are expected to play outside, Seldon's tackling ability and elite feet should see him used early at nickel. He has the stickiness to play normal downs outside and move in to end your slot fades and still be an asset to against the run. He'll also be fun to track over the next couple of years since he's the kind of player who should (continue to) shine in a camp setting.

We'll get a more thorough commit post up later this afternoon on Kalil Branham (spoiler: box jump) and get into more detail on Seldon later.

[UPDATE: A previous version of this article suggested Seldon might be McDoom-ish slot receiver. He's 100% nickel -seth]

You'll need to comb the annals of psychohistory to write Seldon's recruiting profile.

Welcome aboard! 2 high 3* guys in 2 days is a pretty good start to the 2020 class. And based on how they performed at the camp I'm guessing they'll be moving upward in the rankings in the future

The camp was a Michigan camp that scouts don’t attend and doesn’t impact their rankings.

The purpose of the camps is to give the coaching staff a better look at these kids and gives some under the radar guys a chance to get some attention from the staff.

Yes, but when Michigan offers a kid that may not be too familiar to the recruiting services, the services will certainly take notice and a bump often results.  We've seen it a zillion times.

But that has nothing to do with “based on how they performed at the camp.”

It certainly has something to do with the fact that ESPN hasn’t released much of their rankings for the 2020 class yet and Rivals is just today releasing their top 250. So these kids are ONLY ranked by 247 at this point.

Their rankings will all change. But they’re both ranked in the low 300’s right now. They’re ahead of the point where a Michigan offer results in a rankings bump.

It's hard for me to get worked up today about 2020 recruits, even if they're rated as 5-star can't-miss prospects.

I wish this guy would quit writing for the Freep and get busy on a new Jane's Addiction album.

His head coach is probably mad.

Maybe now we can move on from Belleville hates Michigan conspiracy theories as some bullshit excuse for recruiting misses with this one. So its a win win of a good player and the death of a stupid excuse from people who can't possibly believe any mistakes can be made by the coaching staff.

Additionally, some can now also admit that everything isn't a mistake made by the coaches.  Sometimes kids just don't want to come to Michigan.

Sure not every recruiting miss is a mistake but it seems like they fucked up the Dobbs recruitment and in general lost a year and half of in state recruiting momentum when they lost ty wheatley as an in-state ace and tried to backfill him with Drevno and Pep.

They may have messed that up; I honestly don't know.  But that has been a weird recruitment all along.  I remember him being everything from a heavy OSU lean to MSU to a slew of SEC teams.  Hell, Michigan was apparently a leader in the clubhouse at some point per 24/7's weird prediction trackers.  Michigan lost out on a big recruit in the state, but I don't think Michigan was ever truly a big option for him regardless of who was recruiting.

Why do you think that just because a kid doesn’t want to go to Michigan, that the staff made some sort of mistake?

Not everyone grows up a Michigan fan and wants to go to the school.

Dude, straw man.

Crowell does seem to have an itchy trigger when it comes to getting mad at Michigan. That high school coaches have preferences between state schools is hardly conspiracy. It's equally silly to imagine where your coach wants you to play is the only factor in where you play. Jermain Crowell could dislike Michigan. Crowell could try to sway players toward Michigan State. Crowell could still see plenty of his players go to Michigan, especially since it's so close to Ann Arbor. These things aren't mutually exclusive.

He used to work for Thomas Wilcher, and they maintain a strong relationship, but there's little doubt Wilcher likes to see his players go to Michigan, and many do, and some don't. You can want what is best for your players and be biased toward thinking what's best for them is to go to your school. It's okay. It happens. It's totally normal. Stop making a thing out of it.
