Roy Keane replies when asked if Man United should sack Jose Mourinho

Roy Keane doesn’t believe Manchester United should sack Jose Mourinho before the end of the season.

The Red Devils slumped to a 3-1 loss to bitter rivals Liverpool FC at Anfield on Sunday evening to fall further adrift in the top-four race.

Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 11 points adrift of Chelsea, who occupy the final Champions League qualification spot.

Liverpool FC are sitting at the top of the table unbeaten and 19 points ahead of Jose Mourinho’s side to highlight the widening gap between the two teams.

Mourinho has clashed with his record signing Paul Pogba in the current campaign, while the Manchester United boss hasn’t been afraid to publicly criticise his star players.

Manchester United have appointed David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Mourinho since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 after his 13th and final Premier League title.

Former Manchester United captain Keane believes the Red Devils should persist with Mourinho until next summer at the earliest.

“It’s hard to disagree that Jose is not getting the best out of his players,” Keane told Sky Sports on Sunday afternoon when asked about Mourinho’s future after the Liverpool FC game.

“There’s more to it than that, though, it’s easy to look at the manager and get him out of the door. His CV warrants time, whether that be to the end of the season or another year.

“He certainly shouldn’t go before then. People talk about Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp being geniuses. Pep won nothing in his first season at Manchester City and he went to the board and said he needed four defenders, not one. They backed him.

“Looking at Klopp’s Liverpool over the last few years and we’ve said they are not bad but they were desperate for a goalkeeper and a centre-half and they went and got them.

“Now, all of a sudden people say Liverpool are going places, but they are still to win a trophy.

“Mourinho is in a position now where they shouldn’t make a bad situation worse by persevering with these players.”

Keane added: “Manchester United bought players before when Alex Ferguson was there, and it hasn’t worked out. You move them on, that’s the name of the game.

“I don’t care about how many points United are behind Liverpool and Manchester City, that’s going to get bigger, that’s not their problem.

“The problem is getting back to being a really good team, winning football matches and having a solid foundation.”

Jesse Lingard cancelled out Sadio Mane’s brilliant opening goal before substitute Xherdan Shaqiri scored two deflected goals to secure three points for the hosts.

Manchester United will take on promoted side Cardiff City in their next Premier League game on Saturday evening.

Only Fulham, Burnley, Southampton and Cardiff have conceded more goals than Manchester United in the current campaign.
