Liverpool FC set to rival Man United in race to sign 22-year-old Bundesliga midfielder – report

Liverpool FC are set to rival Chelsea and Manchester United for the signature of Schalke 04 Leon Goretzka, according to reports in Germany.

German newspaper Bild, as quoted by Metro, is reporting that Goretzka is set to be a free agent next summer after entering the final 12 months of his contract at Schalke 04.

The same article states that Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and Spanish giants Barcelona are both monitoring the 22-year-old midfielder.

Goretzka is attracting plenty of interest from the Premier League with Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United, according to the report.

However, the story claims that Arsenal have ended their pursuit of the Germany international, while Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have cooled their interest.

Goretzka scored five goals in 30 games in the Bundesliga last season as well as netting two goals in the Europa League.

Liverpool could have the edge on their rivals given German coach Jurgen Klopp won’t have to overcome a language barrier with the Schalke 04 midfielder.

The Reds have a growing German influence with Emre Can fast becoming an important player for the Merseyside outfit.

The German midfielder moved to Schalke 04 from Bochum in a deal worth around £3m.

Goretzka has scored 14 goals in 116 appearances in all competitions for Schalke 04.

The 22-year-old has earned 10 caps for the German national team.
