Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool were ‘lucky’ to get summer signing

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool were lucky to be able to sign Dominic Solanke from Chelsea.

The England Under-20 international completed a free transfer to the Merseyside outfit from the Premier League champions earlier this month.

Solanke struggled to break into the Chelsea team under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte to push the striker towards the exit door at Stamford Bridge.

The new Liverpool signing won the golden ball for his standout performances in the Under-20 World Cup earlier this summer to help England win the tournament.

Solanke netted in Liverpool’s win against Premier League rivals Crystal Palace in a pre-season game last week to open his account.

The teenager struggled to break into the first-team at Chelsea despite being part of their decorated set up over the past five seasons.

Liverpool manager Klopp insisted Solanke will get a chance to shine at the Merseyside club irrespective of his age if the striker proves his quality.

“We don’t hesitate about age, we don’t think about it. It’s not the name, it’s not the age, it’s just the quality. That’s the one thing,” Klopp told ESPN.

“Maybe you should ask Dominic. It’s a good thing. I know that Chelsea have a lot of these boys, so it’s difficult for them. It’s outstanding how they brought them all together. From the age of 14 or 15, they were already together with [Ruben] Loftus-Cheek, [Tammy] Abraham, Dominic, Izzy Brown.”

Klopp added: “For that age group they were unbelievable — physically strong and football-wise, really strong. That’s really rare. But they cannot all go through at Chelsea.

“At one point, I think it makes sense for the player to look for other options and that’s what Dominic did. We were lucky that we could get him.”

Liverpool signed Egypt international Mohamed Salah in a club-record £36.7m deal from Serie A giants AS Roma earlier this month.

The Reds completed an £8m deal to bring Andy Robertson to Anfield from Hull City.
