Rio Ferdinand has warned Jose Mourinho that Manchester United must secure qualification for next season’s Champions League if they want to enjoy a successful summer transfer window.

The Red Devils boosted their hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Burnley to move them to within just one point of fourth-placed Manchester City.

Mourinho’s men have two possible routes into the Champions League next season – finishing in the top four or winning the Europa League.

And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand has talked up the importance of the Red Devils securing a spot in Europe’s elite club competition so as to be able to attract the top players to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.

Speaking on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, Ferdinand said: “From a few weeks ago, Manchester United have got themselves into a position now where it’s in their hands to make sure that they qualify for the Champions League.

“They can either do it by winning the Europa League or through a league position. I’d like to see them do it from the league position first, but I’ll take either.”

He continued: “The Champions League is paramount. If you qualify for the Champions League, you can go into the transfer window and you can go for players.”
