New Zealand Rugby History 1906-1929

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team known as the “All Blacks” represents New Zealand in circuit of International Rugby Union. All Blacks have rated well amongst the best in the world for over 100 years. The first New Zealand team was selected in 1884, for a tour to New South Wales. The team played its first match at home, against a Wellington XV. New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) was formed on Saturday 16 April. New Zealand Rugby Football Union or NZRFU was officially shortened in 2006 with the removal of the world “Football”.

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team competes annually with Australia and South Africa in the Tri Nations competition, winning the trophy a record ten times in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 in its 16-year history. The All Blacks have won over a record 75% of all rugby matches they have played since 1903. All Blacks won International Rugby Board (IRB) Team of the Year award in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and a record fifth time in 2011. New Zealand captain, Richie McCaw, was the International Rugby Board Player of the Year for a record third time. New Zealand National Rugby Union Team is the current holders of the Rugby World Cup 2011 and wins their second Rugby World Cup title after 24 years.

The title of 'The Originals' was bestowed on the 1905-6 team to your Britain, France and Canada, which arrived home to an official welcome befitting conquering heroes.

In 1908, New Zealand won test series from a team representing the British Isles known as the Anglo-Welsh since it consisted of English and Welsh players only by 2-0. New Zealand National Rugby Union Team played South Africa for the first time in 1921, when the South African team toured New Zealand for a Test series that was ended in a draw. New Zealand toured South Africa for the first time in 1928 and this series also ended in a draw.

In 1924–25, the All Blacks embarked on a 32-match tour to the United Kingdom, Ireland France and Canada from September 1924 to February 1925. The team was captained by Cliff Porter with numbered among New Zealand top players George Nepia and brothers Cyril and Maurice Brownlie. All Blacks won all 32 games including four test matches against each side with scoring 838 points and only having 116 points scored against them. The tour was better than the 1905-06 Originals. Cliff Porter was tour captain, but played only 16 tour matches and one test against France of the all 30 games due to injury. Tour vice-captain Jock Richardson took over the captaincy in remaining games. However, the team was deprived of the chance to complete a grand slam when Scotland refused to play them because of an argument over expenses.
