New Zealand Rugby History 1941-1959

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team known as the “All Blacks” represents New Zealand in circuit of International Rugby Union. All Blacks have rated well amongst the best in the world for over 100 years. The first New Zealand team was selected in 1884, for a tour to New South Wales. The team played its first match at home, against a Wellington XV. New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) was formed on Saturday 16 April. New Zealand Rugby Football Union or NZRFU was officially shortened in 2006 with the removal of the world “Football”.

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team competes annually with Australia and South Africa in the Tri Nations competition, winning the trophy a record ten times in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 in its 16-year history. The All Blacks have won over a record 75% of all rugby matches they have played since 1903. All Blacks won International Rugby Board (IRB) Team of the Year award in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and a record fifth time in 2011. New Zealand captain, Richie McCaw, was the International Rugby Board Player of the Year for a record third time. New Zealand National Rugby Union Team is the current holders of the Rugby World Cup 2011 and wins their second Rugby World Cup title after 24 years.

New Zealand National Rugby Union (NZRU) was admitted as a member of the International Rugby Board (IRB) in 1948, at the same time giving up its representation on England’s Rugby Football Union (RFU) Committee. The NZRU had made its first bid for IRB membership in 1908.

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team visited South Africa in the Captaincy of Fred Allen after the end of the Second World War, played the Springboks. New Zealand lost two Test matches on the same day. This was possible because Australia were touring New Zealand at the same time. On the afternoon of 3 September New Zealand, captained by J. B. (Johnny) Smith, were beaten 11-6 by Australia in Wellington. That same afternoon in South Africa New Zealand, captained by Ron Elvidge because Allen was injured, lost 9-3 to the Springboks in Durban. New Zealand also lost their second Test by 16-9, which gave Australia the Bledisloe Cup for the first time. Although each Test against South Africa was very close, New Zealand lost the series 4-0.

The two tours coincided because Maori players were not able to go to South Africa at the time, meaning the Australians, who were not considered strong opposition, played against a New Zealand team made up of the best Maori and the reserve non-Maori players, while the South Africans encountered the best pakeha (non-Maori) players New Zealand had. Also on the 1949 tour, Captain Fred Allen led a partial contingent of All Blacks to Rhodesia for two exhibition matches. The Rhodesia side beat the All Blacks 10-8 in Bulawayo and then drew 3-3 in the follow up match in Salisbury.

In 1956, the All Blacks won a Test series against South Africa for the first time. The Springboks were the All Blacks’ greatest traditional rivals and had delivered some of the All Blacks’ worst defeats. After splitting the first two Tests of the 1956 series, the All Blacks won the third and fourth to clinch a famous, long-awaited victory. During the series, New Zealand introduced Don Clarke and brought back Kevin Skinner in the last two Tests to help secure the win. In 1959, the All Blacks played in their 100th Test match, a loss in Auckland to the touring British Isles. New Zealand's 3-1 series won over the Lions in 1959 proved to be the start of a dominant period in All Black rugby.
