49ers working out former New Orleans safety

By James Jones | @9ernewswriter | May 30, 2017 1:32pm,  PDT

If John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have shown the masses anything it’s that they’re not going to rest on their laurels of this offseason. They have and will continue to look for ways to improve the 49ers roster.

With 35-players having been released from the 2016 roster already, the following news aligns with the thought process of the front office.

Per Adam Schefter the team is working out a group of defensive backs in Santa Clara today. The most notable name of the group appears to be Safety Jairus Byrd, released in February by the New Orleans Saints.

Byrd had signed a six-year $54 million contract before the 2015 season but has missed 15-games in the last two seasons since inking that deal.

The 49ers already have high level draft picks manning the safety positions with Eric Reid (#18 overall in 2013) and the newly converted Jimmie Ward (#30 overall in 2014) getting reps this offseason.

Byrd is certainly worth a look however, even though it could be difficult for him to find a landing spot with this group. At 30-years old and with his recent injury history he has an uphill battle to be sure. If he does manage to catch on, any contract will almost certainly be be a one-year, prove it deal.

Again, Lynch and Shanahan have no vested interest in the players who were drafted before their arrival, save for a few. They have made it abundantly clear that the majority of positions are up for grabs as training camp looms. Clearly that includes the defensive backfield as well.
