49ers Not Finished Looking At Upgrades. RFA Jacquies Smith To Visit

By James Jones | @9ernewswriter | Mar 24, 2017, 1:45 pm PDT

It appears that 49ers GM John Lynch is far from done looking to free agency to help a roster that was left bereft of talent under former GM Trent Baalke’s watch.

Per Ian Rappoport of NFL Network the 49ers are having restricted free agent defensive end Jacquies Smith come to the bay area for a visit. Smith registered 13.5 combined sacks in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, the last two years he was healthy.

If Smith is a player that Lynch feels can help the 49ers with their significant pass rushing needs, don’t expect him to leave without an offer. Whether or not Tampa Bay matches any offer would depend on the compensation.

The Bucs only placed a $1.797 million tender on Smith, leading us to believe they don’t covet his services all that much. Either that or they didn’t think there would be much of a market for a player who tore his ACL in week one of last season.

While some fans are reluctant to ever see another player drafted or signed who is coming off of an ACL injury, (see Baalke’s M.O.) this is different. There is a large gap between paying a proven player who has shown the ability to post numbers, under $2 million versus spending a draft pick on a college player who in most of Baalke’s All-ACL Team cases, never made an impact.
