How to Play Your Best: 7 Golf Tips

PGA and LPGA pros make it look easy, don’t they? They always seem to make the shot—no matter how difficult. They leave us saying to ourselves: “If only I could do that when I have that Shot.”

To play like the pros, you need to put in hours and hours of Practice, just like they do.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t make top quality shots.

You can.

In fact, you probably execute at least one shot that like a pro every time you play. If you’re like me, it’s toward the end of round when you’re just getting ready to finish.

Often, it’s the shot that gets you to come back for another round and try to play your best no matter how bad your day.

Below are seven golf tips that can help you make quality shots when you need to and play your best on any course:

• Develop a repeatable pre-shot routine — This effort is the key to getting you physically and mentally ready to hit shots. So make sure it’s repeatable and consistent. Here’s one approach:

1. Stand behind the Ball, pick out an intermediate target three to five feet in front of your ball, then align your clubface and body lines to it.

2. Take your grip while behind the ball. Then walk into your address position from the side.

3. Take a deep breath, focus on your primary target, and then make an aggressive swing.

• Hover your practice swing — If you slice your tee shots, it’s because of a too steep downswing that leads to an outside-in swing and an open clubface at impact. To eliminate your slice, hover your practice swing over the ball. That flattens your swing plane out. It also creates more rotation through the impact zone and generates more clubface rotation, which helps straighten out your drive.

• Get out of a fairway bunker — You need to keep your lower body as still as possible when hitting this shot. Many golfers don’t. And it costs them. Try thinking about hitting the ball while you’re standing in the barrel. Don’t let your left or right side bump into the barrell’s rim. Then pick the ball cleanly. Make a divot after you hit the ball. Use this approach and you’ll get out every time.

• Divide the green into thirds — When hitting approach shots, keep this idea in mind: The higher the shot, the less the ball will roll. So when it’s time to hit an iron, determine the club you want to hit and at what trajectory. Then divide the green into thirds. If you hit an SW or a PW, the ball won’t roll past the first third of the green. A 9- or 8-iron will roll to the middle of the green. And a 7- or 6- iron will roll to the back third of the green.

• Control shot trajectory — This is critical on hitting pitch shots, so learn to control trajectory with shaft lean. Here’s how: Use a 56-degree sand wedge for these shots. Start with the shaft at the 6:00 o’clock position, with the ball at a 12:00 o’clock position. To hit a pitch shot with a high trajectory, lean the shaft slightly back. To hit a shot with low trajectory, move the shaft slightly forward. Keep your body passive and use mostly your arms for the shot. Return the shaft to the position from which it started.

• Use real-time practice strokes — Do this every time you putt the ball. Too many golfers don’t. Take one or two practice swings and hold your finish for the length of time you think it will take to arrive at the hole. A five-footer will take about 3 seconds to reach the hole. Making a real-time practice stroke helps you gauge ball speed. It will also help you eliminate those unwanted 3-putts, chopping strokes off your score.

• Practice with a reason — Tour pros always practice with a purpose. Do the same. Practice chipping with the object of getting it near the hole, just as if it were a real shot. Some pros use a Frisbee that they can place anywhere on the green to practice chipping. Use it as a target instead of a hole and move it all over the green, so you have different shots. Practice with a purpose you’ll sharpen your skills in no time.

Ingrain these tips in your game. They’ll help you hit top quality shots—the kind that you see the pros hit on TV. Playing your best and hitting top quality shots will help you chop strokes off your score and break 80.
