England  would rather have been preparing for the Euro than playing friendlies at this point of time. However with the national team unable to qualify for the finals in Austria and Switzerland, this is a welcome chance for new coach Fabio Capello to try out new players as well as new formations.Peterborough goalkeeper Joe Lewis has been drafted into his squad after Chris Kirkland withdrew due to injury. Michael Owen and Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas are also out. Owen is ill with a virus, while Jenas has an ankle issue ahead of the friendly.Owen's unavailability means Capello is free to try out Dean Ashton and Gabriel Agbonlahor in his place. Former skipper David Beckham is also in the squad and is due to report on Sunday.
Meanwhile intense speculation surrounds Capello's choice for the England captaincy. The Italian has so far tried out Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand for the role. John Terry, Wayne Rooney and possibly even Gareth Barry are being touted as possibilities ahead of this game.
United States  coach Bob Bradley has included a majority of England-based players in his squad ahead of the game. Clint Dempsey, Carlos Bocanegra, Eddie Johnson, Benny Feilhaber, DaMarcus Beasley, Eddie Lewis, Jonathan Spector, Tim Howard and Jay DeMerit have been included in his squad.
