In a surprising move by Andy Reid, Michael Vick will be handed the keys to the Eagles’ starting quarterback role. I’m sure the entire PETA board is collectively banging it’s head against the table.  So much for Kevin Kolb becoming the quarterback of the present and the future.  Reid had announced the day before the move that Kolb would remain the starter, but Vick’s potential and game-changing ability shown in week two might have pushed Reid over the edge.

Now, Kolb is surrounded by trade rumors, and the Eagles are once again sprung into win-now mode.  Vick is now 30 years old, but his three years away from football might buy him time before all the years of wear and tear catch up to him.

Whether he is a long term option or not, this move doesn’t make sense for the Eagles.  Didn’t they just trade away a still all-star caliber quarterback in Donovan McNabb?

The original plan was to sign Vick on the cheap and then trade him once his market value began to creep back up.  But the real question is: If the Eagles don’t believe in Kolb, what made them believe that he is a better option than McNabb?

I don’t think they would have an answer, because Vick’s top end value will be equal or less than McNabb’s.  Vick is cheaper and younger than McNabb, but still, it’s a big adjustment for an already prolific offense to make for a small gain.

For the Eagles’ sake, hopefully it works out for them, and Kolb doesn’t make them regret it in the future.

Vick’s stats going into week three:

Passing: 37-58, 459 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT

Rushing: 19 Attempts, 140 yards, 0 TD

His passing seems to have improved, while he still has the burst to cut down field at any time.  Right move or not, Vick is always a fun, dynamic player to watch, and I can guarantee that there will be many more people watching Eagles’ games this year.
