Real Madrid 1-0 PSG : Takeaways

Real Madrid edged past a valiant PSG 1-0 as Nacho’s effort secured their passage into the last 16. In a game that was largely dominated by the visiting side, Los Blancos went ahead just before the half hour mark when substitute Nacho struck from a tight angle, that took one bounce for net.

The home lead from thereon, but Les Parisians maintained their supremacy over an under-strength Real Madrid side as they attacked with all vim and vigor.

Some lack of cutting edge and fluffing of lines kept Laurent Blanc’s swashbucklers from finding the net, which otherwise, was a sparkling game for the French champions.

We look across some of the takeaways from the gripping encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu

1.PSG just didn’t deserve to be on the losing side

Right from the first moment of the game to the last, Paris St.Germain were the better team in the tussle and thoroughly deserved to take atleast a point away from this game. The visitors dominated over the Whites and also created the better set of opportunities going forward.

Having underwhelmed in Paris in the first leg two weeks ago, Les Parisians flew out of the blocks right from the off, and there was no stopping them. Chances kept flowing in at a terrifying rate, and showed Real Madrid they are no pushovers.

PSG were really unlucky to end up on the losing side at the end, but in all honesty, were the better side by a country mile.

2.Di Maria makes a stunning homecoming

Angel di Maria returned to his old stomping ground for the first time since he traded the white of Madrid for the red of Manchester last summer, and had his rings all over the Bernabeu.

The Argentine maestro was a livewire, wreaking havoc in Real’s defence with his skill, technique and trickery on the ball. Di Maria stemmed most of his side’s chances, and even had two great opportunities to get on the scoresheet against his former colleagues.

While he failed to guide his side to a win, it was a homecoming worth remembering for him.

3.Nacho plays the unlikely hero

With Marcelo sustaining a calf problem, Nacho was called into action in place of the Brazilian and made his presence felt after three minutes of coming on as the Spaniard struck a lunging deflection past Kevin Trapp that took a bounce before hitting the net.

It proved to be a winner in the end, as PSG, despite all their superiority, were never able to find an answer.

Even in the following set of events, Nacho shone brightly. The youngster was defensively resolute, hampering Serge Aurier’s runs into the box and making crucial tackles.

Nacho isn’t an adventurous fullback as is Marcelo, but made light of his absence  by making a priceless contribution in the attack with his goal.
