More Late Match Misery For Inter

For the second time in three matches, Inter conceded a goal in the 90th minute to drop two more valuable points in the race for a Champions League place.

At the beginning of the month it was Giovanni Simeone scoring late for Fiorentina to deny Inter a win, and on Sunday it was Alberto Paloschi’s turn as Inter drew 1-1 at SPAL.

Four dropped points from winning positions this month. Four points that could be the difference between Inter playing in the Champions League or Europa League next season.

The draw means that Inter’s winless streak has now reached eight games in all competitions. The last win by Luciano Spalletti’s side in the league was December 3rd against Chievo. That is almost two months ago!!

Fortunately for Inter they are still in the top four as inexplicably, both Lazio and Roma lost this week.

The lights will be on late at Appiano Gentil this week, as Spalletti has to find a way to turn this around. Top of his list has to be how to get Mauro Icardi more involved in the play. In a dire first half performance against SPAL, Icardi only touched the ball five times.

When your best striker has as many touches in a match as your goalkeeper (15), you are not going to win many games.

Besides getting Icardi more involved, Spalletti needs to straighten out a defense that is looking vulnerable late in matches.

“Clearly when you concede a goal like that in stoppages, it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“We certainly have a lot more work to do. I wouldn’t say I’m worried. I haven’t seen particular improvements even from when we had that winning streak, as we always had these blackouts where we lost the ball in banal fashion and didn’t fight back.

“We can’t find a balance of behaviour and homogenous mentality. Until we do that, we won’t go far.”

What did you think of Inter’s performance against SPAL?
