Grade Your Canucks After Day #1 Of Free Agency

Busy day for Jimbo.

How was your Saturday? Get an early start, a nice breakfast perhaps, take in a little nature?

Of course not. You kept refreshing Twitter like the rest of us heathens. You’re in good company.

Here’s my favorite quote from today, courtesy of Das Botch:

A year ago the Canucks spent $36 million alone on Loui Eriksson and he scored 11 goals. This year, they got six players for $22.7 million all in.

So that’s progress.

Bingo bango bongo.

Again, Benning can’t sell a shot at the playoffs, much less the Cup (part of which explains why Ryan Miller bolted out of town), but he can sell a young team with plenty of openings for veterans to push the rookies or keep their spots warm while they continue developing. So Benning went out and filled those needs:

  • Sam Gagner is a “right shot centre with good speed and skill”
  • Michael Del Zotto is a “mobile, playmaking defenceman who adds depth and scoring to our blueline”
  • Anders Nilsson has a “big, athletic frame...who will continue to make us competitive every night at the goaltending position”
  • Alexander Burmistrov “has shown good offensive potential throughout his young career”
  • Local B.C. giant of a man Patrick Wiercioch “has excellent mobility for a player his size and possesses a big shot from the point”
  • Last, but not least, re-upping Anton Rodin the night before because he’s a “...good offensive player who I know feels has a lot to prove.”

Some reclamation projects, some help with special teams, some help for the sagging blueline and it’s a Sweet Swedish duo in net (for dirt cheap which is also a change). Perhaps best of all is that Benning didn’t hand out crazy terms on the deals and still has $8 million in cap space to deal with Bo Horvat and the other RFAs.

There’s also the failed Jason Demers for Erik Gudbranson swap that Demers nixed which suggests everything from Benning isn’t done tinkering with the blueline to Vancouverlololololol for the critics.

On that last note, both SBN and THN labeled Vancouver as losers today because they’re not dedicated to sucking enough. Then again Vancouver could have done nothing and they’d still be labeled losers by the same cast of clowns because some people are born miserable.

Forget them though, what’s your feeling at the end of day #1?
