The Steelers should rescind the Franchise offer to Bell…..but will they

Le’Veon Bell refused to commit to the Steelers long term yesterday as he turned down a 5 year 70 million dollar contract to remain with the team. Will the Steelers now refuse to commit 1 year for 14.5 million to Bell?

The options available to Bell regarding when to accept the Franchise tender and report for duty is premised on the assumption that the franchise tender will still be available to be accepted. Until Bell accepts the franchise tender, the Steelers could (in theory) yank it.

Do I see them doing this? No. Why you ask? The Steelers have long been a respected franchise and an organization that does the right thing and takes care of there personnel. Case in point earlier this year, when the Steelers converted Ryan Shazier’s 2018 contract into a bonus. However I think its time for the black and yellow to be a little more selfish this go around with Bell.

Can you really believe Bell turned down a $70 million dollar 5 year contract from his current team? Im still in shock and frankly even more so relieved at the fact we didnt spend that much on a running back about to leave his prime. Paying 13 million dollars a year for a running back over the age of 30 that will have as many miles on his body as Bell just seems like an investment waiting to go wrong.

As to the on-field production, the Steelers now must consider whether they’ll truly get the best out of Bell in 2018. Sure, he’s saying all the right things. But will he be making business decisions between the white lines, especially as the calendar slides to November and December? Throw in the fact that Bell has become the rare Steelers player to refuse to submit to the team’s wishes, and the Steelers could decide that it’s in the team’s short- and long-term best interests to sever ties before he signs the tender.

Bottom line is the Steelers have stood by Le’Veon Bell when he fucked up in his career being arrested and suspended and his best chance to win is in the next 2-3 years with Pittsburgh. Ultimately greed was more important then winning and playing for a team that has always had your back.
