What to Expect at the Wildflower Triathlon Festival

There is no Triathlon quite like the Wildflower Triathlon Festival. Why?

Wildflower is so much more than a race; it’s a 3-day party celebrating multi-sport, music, wellness and outdoor adventure! No wonder it has that vivacious Woodstock vibe. It is a race like no other, bringing together healthy lifestyles and wellness, music and wine and a variety of races for all ages and expertise.

The festival started in 1983 and has continued to be one of the most iconic Triathlon events since then which can be attributed to the scenic (and tough!) course and the festive mood.  This is the one triathlon event that you can bring your friends and family along to enjoy!

When is the Wildflower Triathlon?

Wildflower’s 35th Annual Triathlon Festival is from May 4-6 in 2018.

Held at Lake San Antonio in Central California, the Wildflower Triathlon Festival is back after a gap in 2017 for the first time in 35 years which happened due to extremely low water levels in the lake. Due to a wet winter, the lake is within 5% of its maximum depth making it possible to have the event again this year.

The Wildflower Race Schedule

The Wildflower Races have a variety of different events held over the course of the weekend. Apart from its classic Long Course, this year the festival also includes an Olympic distance race along with 5k and 10K trail runs, an Off-road and On-road Sprint Distance triathlon and a Stand up Paddle Boat Race.

The first day of the festival (i.e. 4th of May 2018) will feature several different events including sports clinics and live entertainment.

Headed for the Wildflower Triathlon? 4 Things to Know

  1. Accommodation

There are plenty of options when it comes to accommodation at the Wildflower Festival. You can choose to camp in true Woodstock style at one of the allotted camp grounds. Most sites have water, fire pits and picnic tables. And if camping isn’t really your things, why not try glamping?

There are options like Canvas Bell Tents or Tinker Tin trailers. If you want to stay in a hotel, there are hotel available in the town of Paso Robles about 45 minutes away. With the large crowds expected, it’s a good idea to book your accommodation before you get there (and you probably want to hurry as bookings run out).

Oh and if you are camping, don’t forget your earplugs, you’ll want to get a good night’s sleep before your race day.

  1. Nutrition

This year, the festival will have food trucks and beer gardens, but you’ll probably want to hit those after your big race. Packing some food that can be cooked over a campfire is a good idea, especially if you are particular about what you like. Or you could check out some of the food from the pre-race dinners.

  1. The Race

Swim: Warm up well on land before you get into the water. You might not get enough time in the water to warm up properly. So don’t put on your wetsuit too early, use that time to do some stretches and warm up exercises instead.

Bike: We suggest getting there early to check out the bike course, especially if you are participating in the Wildflower triathlon for the first time. It’s a hilly course and you’ll want to plan your strategy well to stop your legs from burning out.

Run: If you thought you were done with the hills after the bike leg of the race, you’d be wrong. So be prepared.

  1. Things to Do with Family

There are plenty of activities both you and your family can enjoy at this triathlon event, apart from watching some of the most elite athletes at their best.

  1. Go Shopping: The Wildflower Marketplace has some lovely handicrafts made by local artisans centering on the triathlon theme.
  2. Try Some Gear: Try some of the latest training gear in the expo areas.
  3. Helicopter Ride: Get a bird’s eye view of the gorgeous Wildflower venue and its surrounding hills and vineyards.
  4. Kids Area: There’s a whole kids area too with interactive games, a playground and an arts and crafts section – plenty to keep your little ones occupied while you gear yourself up for the big race.
  5. Check out Some Live Music: It’s not called a festival for no reason. There’s a centralized stage area with some great local bands and headline acts. So whether you like bluegrass, jazz or rock ‘n roll, there’s something there for everyone.

You can also treat yourself to a massage after your race at the Spa or indulge in some light yoga throughout the weekend at the yoga workshops that are open to all. So pack your gear and get ready for an unforgettable experience at the Wildflower festival!
