What to expect from Wigan, Blackburn and Rotherham in the Championship?

It’s much harder for a League One club to fight for more than a survival in Championship then it is for a Championship club in Premier League. Championship is a tough league, you always have at least ten clubs fighting for a promotion, and every single one of them is aiming for a win against newly promoted League One clubs. Expectations are almost always the same; people think that newly promoted clubs will fight for a survival. So what can we expect from Wigan Athletic, Blackburn Rovers and Rotherham United this season in Championship?

Wigan Athletic

Wigan is far from Sheffield United last season, but I expect them to be the best newly promoted side in Championship. Manager Paul Cook has made a really good atmosphere within the team and he finished first for two years in a row. He won the League Two title with Portsmouth in May 2017, and then he led Wigan Athletic to the League One title and direct promotion to Championship. Over his time in League One, Paul Cook played some great attacking football with Wigan, he had some excellent results like 7-0 away win against Oxford United and home win in FA Cup against Premier League champions Manchester City. Wigan managed to win against two more Premier League sides in their FA Cup run and these are the games where they showed their real quality. This season in Championship they can easily get a mid table finish.

Although Will Grigg is the famous one, Nick Powell will most certainly be their key player this season. The attacking midfielder scored 15 goals last season in League One where he had a key role in every game that Wigan played. It’s hard for him to repeat that record in Championship, but he already scored for Wigan in their opening game against Sheffield Wednesday. Will Grigg had a bad season last time that Wigan played in Championship, but I expect him to be in the better form this time under Paul Cook.

Championship is a very competitive league, so it is interesting how the newly promoted side would perform this season.

Blackburn Rovers

After a quick return to the Championship, Blackburn seems to have a team that can easily avoid relegation. Tony Mowbray had a lot of ups and downs in his career, but he has a lot of experience too, so he might be just the right person to safely run Blackburn this season in Championship. In League One they showed an impressive form and determination to quickly get back in Championship. They have lost only two home games in their entire season and if they continue that form in Championship they can easily avoid the relegation battle. Impressive pre-season and their first game against Ipswich are telling us that Blackburn Rovers are here to stay, and although Wigan will probably finish above them once again, we can expect a good season from Blackburn.

Another attacking midfielder, Bradley Dack, will most certainly be a key player for Blackburn Rovers this season. Their last season top scorer already scored one against Ipswich in his first Championship game and it should be expected for him to score many goals for Blackburn this season. Their main striker, Danny Graham, also scored one against Ipswich, so this might just mean that Blackburn Rovers will be quite dangerous in attack this season.

Rotherham United

Such a bright season is not expected for Rotherham United. Although they’ve got promoted through play-offs, they were not convincing at all last season in League One. Paul Warne is certainly young and promising manager, but will his 4-4-2 work in Championship? I don’t think so. Rotherham United doesn’t seem to have a squad that can fight for anything more than a survival. They played their first game this season against Brentford, where they lost 5-1, their next game is against Ipswich and another loss might badly affect their entire season. Rotherham’s defence is conceding a lot, so trying to survive with a defensive football will not work for them. They haven’t made the right transfers this summer, so they might face another relegation from Championship this season.
