Antonio Conte goes the wrong way?

Antonio Conte is a great football manager. He is a winner, he knows his business and he has already demonstrated his quality in the Premier League. In terms of football management there is nothing that the Italian would be questioned or criticized for.

It is different when it comes to his view about Premier League business, however. Instead of being focused on Chelsea’s development and minding his own business, the Italian manager went a wrong way by commenting on other football clubs.

Without being provoked or drawn into any conversation about other teams’ development, Antonio Conte attacked Spurs and questioned their ambitions and status as a club.

“My question is this: What are Tottenham’s expectations?”

“If Spurs don’t win the title, it’s not a tragedy. If they don’t arrive in the Champions League, it’s not a tragedy. If they go out in the first round of the Champions League, it’s not a tragedy. If they go out after the first game that they play in the Europa League, it’s not a tragedy”, said Conte

The Chelsea manager added that “You must understand the status of the team” and explained that “Maybe for Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and – I don’t know – Liverpool, it is a tragedy” if they don’t play for the Champions League.

The Italian manager shared his view that “Every team has to understand what their ambitions are. If their ambitions are to fight for the title or win the Champions League, you must buy expensive players. Otherwise you continue to stay in your level. It’s simple” and then asked  “My question is this: What are Tottenham’s expectations?”.

Minding ones own business?

Have Conte allowed himself to get carried away when thinking about the Premier League, other clubs status and history and his own business at Chelsea? It is very likely that the success the Conte achieved within his first season at Chelsea made him excessively confident about his own judgement.

If we look at the English top-flight from historical perspective, then we must admit that the Tottenham was a bigger team than Chelsea in England. Until Roman Abramovich took in at Stamford Birdge in 2003, Chelsea had only one English First Division title – in season 1954/1955 and 3 FA Cups. Spurs had won two titles – in season 1950/1951, 1960/1961 and 8 FA Cups.

Since the arrival of the Russian billionaire, things changed and Chelsea have become a club with a global fan base, one of the most successful one in England and in the European football. The Blues deserve credit for 15 years of good work and their historical achievements. But, so Spurs does.

With all the respect to Antonio Conte and his football intellect, it is just not his business to judge on other club’s transfer policies. He hasn’t been appointed to deal with Spurs transfers, so he’d better not discuss it. The best thing that the Italian would do, is to focus on Chelsea development as the Blues have a very important season ahead – one in which they will try to regain the Premier League title and hopefully to win an European trophy.
