Chelsea star set to miss crucial match against Liverpool

Chelsea had a pretty rough day on Sunday with the Blues not only losing their 100% record but also suffered a major set back as Antonio Rudiger injured his muscle

The Blues’ 100% start to the season came to an end. The Blues drew 0-0 with West Ham. Maurizio Sarri’s side will now face Liverpool twice in 6 days time. Before they face Liverpool, Chelsea has been handed a major blow. The F.A. Cup Champions’ injury list seems to be growing again. Chelsea have one more player added to their injury list.

Antonio Rüdiger couldn’t play the whole 90 minutes in today’s game against West Ham. The German defender was forced off with an apparent muscle injury. The injury took place at 70th minute of the game.

The injury seems to be a groin injury and have a slight chance to linger well beyond any initial prognosis. Rüdiger was able to leave the pitch under his own power but looks set to join Pedro on treatment table. Chelsea are short of quality players with the likes of Cesc Fàbregas and Mateo Kovačić not fully fit. Chelsea would be hoping Rüdiger to get back as the Blues have 3 matches in span of 3 days.

Rüdiger was Maurizio Sarri’s first choice defender this season. He has been rock solid at back and kicked off the season with impressive performances. However, with Rüdiger on the treatment table, it seems manager Maurizio Sarri has a defensive problem. Gary Cahill hasn’t played a single game this season. Given the fact that Rüdiger was Chelsea’s best defender this season. It seems that Chelsea will face some serious issues.

With the prospect of facing goal scoring and pacy Liverpool, it would be an uphill task for Maurizio’s Sarri to win his debut league cup match.

Author’s take:

With Chelsea’s injury list increasing, it is certainly a big problem for Maurizio Sarri. The Blues were off to a perfect start but injuries have already proved to be distracting Chelsea’s momentum. With Rüdiger injured, the Blues will have to be heavily reliant on David Luiz and England centre-back Gary Cahill.

Cahill hasn’t started a game yet this season. But given his experience and his impressive clean sheet record against Chelsea, he might be in the playing XI on Wednesday night. Sarri still would be in a dilemma whether to stick to Cahill or Andreas Christensen.
