According to reports, Eredivisie Giants Ajax has set a price tag of £44.2 Million for their 21-year-old starlet Frenkie De Jong.
The Dutchman has been on the radars of both Barcelona and Manchester City for quite some time and now it is being reported that the Catalans lead the battle to sign the prodigy. De Jong, who is just 21 currently, has been a very crucial player for Ajax this season as he has appeared 22 times in the Eredivisie this season, securing 7 assists to his name.
The Dutchman possesses incredible maturity, far beyond his age, De Jong has sent a gesticulating message across entire Europe with his performances. The midfielder has been making waves over in the Eredivisie, earmarking himself as one of the division’s top young talents.
However, with Ajax being all set to complete the signing of Daley Blind from Manchester United, Barcelona’s hope of signing De Jong has increased. However, it won’t be that easy for the Catalans to get him especially after a report from Spanish publications Sport suggesting that the Amsterdam club has slapped a £44.2m (€50m) price tag on the former Willem II defender.
Barcelona sees De Jong as an exciting prospect after Javier Mascherano left for Hebei China Fortune in January. It will be worth seeing that whether Barça will pour such a huge amount on Ajax starlet or not. If reports are to believed, telephonic conversations between De Jong and Ajax director Marc Overmans – who used to play for Barcelona – are regular.
Barça are preparing their third bid for De Jong. Yesterday, the club spoke with the Ajax midfielder’s agent to discuss their strategy after the two previous rejections from the Ajax director of football, Marc Overmans.

The 21-year-old has confirmed that Barcelona is interested in him but keeping everything in mind he’s willing to stay at Ajax for one more season in order to continue his development. Speaking to TV network AT5, De Jong said: “Yes, you heard that right.”, confirming Catalan’s interest in him.
When asked about whether he’ll move to Barça or not, De Jong said: “That’s what you have to ask Marc Overmars. I cannot promise (I will stay), of course. But as it stands now, I think I will stay with Ajax this season.”
Frenkie De Jong will now be back in action on 26th July when Ajax takes on SK Strum Graz in a bid to qualify for the Champions League.
