The League Cup is back! No longer in the form of the Carling Cup, nor the Capital One Cup or EFL Cup but actually the Carabao Cup, I’ll just keep to the League Cup for now though.

Tonight sees us welcome League 1 side Doncaster Rovers to the Emirates Stadium in our first appearance in the cup this year.

Similar to Cologne last week, Doncaster aren’t the most familiar of sides for us to be facing, with the last meeting between the clubs coming in this competition in 2005, a match which saw us win on penalties after ending extra time 2-2.

Also like last week we can expect to see some different names as we get another chance to rotate the squad as Arsene Wenger said:

“It will be a similar team to the one that played against Cologne.”

As well as revealing that Calum Chambers will be included in the squad after playing for the under 23’s against Leicester last week.

After getting his first minutes of the season last week too, Jack Wilshere could be up for his first start of the season as Wenger continued to praise him, saying:

“If you ask me is he back to his full, 100 per cent potential, I would say no, but he’s not far away. The rest now can only be gained by competition.

“That’s why I believe that these kind of games are very important for Jack at the moment. He is focused, he is working hard and he is absolutely determined to get his place back in the team. There is a big fight there and that’s what we want.”

A couple of players won’t feature tonight though are Danny Welbeck and Mesut Ozil, with Welbeck out for at least three weeks with a groin injury and Ozil only just coming back into training.

With the League Cup probably not on our priorities everyone would still want to see a performance of quality which has been missing in this competition for a while now, with the club last lifting it under George Graham in 1993.

Since then the closest we’ve come was that final in 2011 that is only remembered for that mix up between Laurent Koscielny and Wojciech Szczesny as well as having even more embarrassing defeats against Bradford and Sheffield Wednesday more recently.

However, as Doncaster haven’t won a game since the last round of this competition against Hull City, this should be quite a straight forward affair against a team low on confidence.

So, we might not be in this competition to win it under Arsene Wenger, but we’ll all be hoping that we show Doncaster some respect knowing they are capable of an upset with our last meeting along with their game against Hull in mind and get the job done to spare us any embarrassment later tonight and in the week to come.
