“Those whose names he knew first were called last, so that one who has Knowledge is one whose name the Father has pronounced. For one whose name has not been spoken is ignorant. … For whoever remains ignorant until the end is a creature of forgetfulness and will perish with it. … Hence, whoever has knowledge is from above. If called, that person hears, replies, and turns toward Him who called. That person ascends to Him and knows how he is called. Having knowledge, that person does the will of Him who called. That persons desire to please Him, finds rest, and receives a certain name. Those who thus are going to have knowledge know whence they came and whither they are going. They know it as someone who, having become intoxicated, has turned from his drunkenness and, having come to himself, has restored what is his own.” ~The Gospel of Truth
Called Last
Why should those with knowledge be called last? For the same reason that the ship’s crew and captain are the last ones to leave a sinking ship. The ones with the knowledge about life boats, life vests, and so on, must show the passengers and help them get off first. Likewise, those who gain knowledge must help teach the rest so they too can be saved.
Divine Knowledge from Above
The knowledge of interest here is not the kind you get in public school or from a book. We are talking about Divine Knowledge, Gnosis, the knowledge that brings higher states of consciousness. Since this is spiritual knowledge, it is higher knowledge in the sense of coming from a higher dimension, not because it come from up in the clouds. Therefore, as the author of this book notes, those who have this higher knowledge are “from above”. Actually, we are all from above, but only those who seek to reach those higher dimensions and higher states of consciousness achieve Gnosis and they are not only from above, but are above.
Doing God’s Will
Having achieve that Knowledge, that person “hears,” “sees,” and “feels” God with his spiritual senses, not the physical. When he does, then he obeys God’s Will at all times. He realizes it is the logical thing to do. When you climb a great mountain for the first time, you follow the professional guide who has made the trip any times before. Likewise, when you are making your spiritual journey to complete enlightenment, you follow the one who not only knows the way the best, but created it! So while some will say they don’t want to follow the will of another, even if it is God, they will do so once they have achieved that Divine Knowledge, they realize what a foolish attitude that is. We are always hearing things like “Don’t reinvent the wheel,” meaning don’t start out on your journey blindly when one has laid out the path for you already. Initially, the spiritual student will follow the path given by her spiritual teacher, but once Divine Knowledge has been gained, you follow the ultimate leader, God Himself.
Ignorance to Knowledge
When the author says that the one who gains divine knowledge is one who “having become intoxicated , has turned from his drunkenness,” he is not contradicting himself. He is saying that once one has become intoxicated on truth, love, and Divine Knowledge, he is no longer caught up in the drunkenness of ignorance and illusion: the world of matter. It is not that he ignores this world, but he sees beyond the illusion to the hidden truths behind it. This actually allows him to function better in both the physical world as well as the spiritual. Thick about that before you decide that it is pointless to develop your spiritual self while you are on a plain of matter.
