Libertarians are well known for their scathing critiques of leftist thought, and now the Alt-Right seems to think we’re their allies. As Richard Spencer found out yesterday, this is not the case. At the International Students for Liberty Conference held in Washington DC, the face of the Alt-Right decided to show up, uninvited, in a poor attempt to recruit libertarians to his cause(or simply to cause trouble, it’s unclear at this point).  This failed miserably. Spencer’s presence was immediately noticed by several attendees who tweeted about it on social media and a heated debate soon followed.

Spencer, seated at a table, began to provide entertainment for the attendees as he spewed his tired White Nationalist rhetoric to anyone who would listen.  The exchange became increasingly heated before Jeffery Tucker, The Foundation for Economic Education’s content director, who Spencer had referred to as “totally awful”, made his way over to Spencer’s table to put him in his place. A severe roasting of Spencer ensued, with Tucker calling him a “liar”, a “troll”, and a “fascist” after informing him that “Fascists are not welcome at an anti-fascist conference!”. The encounter became so heated, that the hotel was forced to call security and remove Spencer from the event, much to everyone’s joy and amusement.

As much as the left likes to throw around the term “fascist” to describe anyone who dares to disagree with them, Libertarians are staunch anti-fascists. White Nationalism is collectivism. It is completely antithetical to the ideas of liberty and individualism. Authoritarianism is diametrically opposed to everything Libertarians stand for.

To quote Ayn Rand in “The Virtue Of Selfishness”

” Racism is the lowest, most crudely primitive form of collectivism. It is the notion of ascribing moral, social or political significance to a man’s genetic lineage—the notion that a man’s intellectual and characterological traits are produced and transmitted by his internal body chemistry. Which means, in practice, that a man is to be judged, not by his own character and actions, but by the characters and actions of a collective of ancestors.

Racism claims that the content of a man’s mind (not his cognitive apparatus, but its content) is inherited; that a man’s convictions, values, and character are determined before he is born, by physical factors beyond his control. This is the caveman’s version of the doctrine of innate ideas—or of inherited knowledge—which has been thoroughly refuted by philosophy and science. Racism is a doctrine of, by and for brutes. It is a barnyard or stock-farm version of collectivism, appropriate to a mentality that differentiates between various breeds of animals, but not between animals and men.”

Nazis are not, nor will they ever be, welcome among the liberty movement.
