Self Control: Its purpose and how to have it

I was a serious binge eater!

In fact, I was one of those people who write health goals, research a lot about nutrition then go on a binge eating spree after that.

This was so annoying because it wasn’t helping me achieve the kind of goals I wanted to achieve just because of this one thing in my mind that was telling me to eat.

Seeing that I needed an intervention, I asked some of my family and friends for help and they would reply…

Just have self-control.

Yeah such a “helpful” advice

I mean…

Self-control?

What’s that?

Is it me looking at those doughnuts that everything in me wants to have then I say no?

If that is all it is then is it worth it?

Because who wants to spend the rest of their lives saying no to the very things they want to have.

What is the purpose of self-control ?

I’ve pondered this question for a while and this is what I think…

Self-control is more than just saying No.

It is controlling the feelings, desires and thoughts you have towards a particular something .

In my case,  it is gaining the ability to reset my mind to have a  healthy view towards food and its function. Once I have control and a healthy mindset towards food, then it  becomes means to serve my purpose not a means to destroys to me.

So how can I have self-control?

  1. Ask God then believe that it is done

I really believe that the first thing you should ever do is present your problem to God. Even as you do so,  believe that it has already been taken care of. This is because when you trust in him you have peace. As a result,  you won’t be dealing with your problem from a place of desperation but from a place of rest.

When you trust in God you deal with issues not from a place of desperation but from a place of peace

It also means that you won’t be thinking too much about your situation. Which is good because,  the more we think about our situation the more it takes a toll on us. So when we learn how to be at peace and trust in God, we shift our eyes from our situation towards God and His perspective.

  1. Meditate it and speak it

I’ve probably mentioned ‘meditation’ a thousand times in my posts. But it ain’t gonna stop because it is REALLLY important!

Take your journal, a bible or go to a website full of quotes and write down verses or quotes to do with self control and overcoming temptation.

After writing them reflect on them and speak them especially when you are faced with the temptation.

It will take time to have effect because you are rewiring your brain. But it works. Overtime you will see your issue doesn’t have an impact on you anymore.

Personally

The verse that I use when I want to overeat is ‘my soul is satisfied as if with the richest of foods’ ( this is my go to verse for a lot of things). I use it as a way of telling myself that I am completely satisfied with what I have eaten.

I’ve said this verse so many times to the point I automatically think it when I am faced with the temptation of overeating.

Self-control isn’t meant to restrict you but improve you quality of life

Yeah!

These are my thoughts
