Here’s why you must meditate daily if you are an entrepreneur

Just like others I also knew that Meditation is a wonderful practice. But, I could relate it to only peace of mind and never thought beyond it. It was one of my friends, Mark, who made me realize the deep impact it can have on every aspect of life.

Mark is into entrepreneurship for five years. I have seen his journey right from day one. Things were fine in the beginning, but after some time one of his big investments went wrong. Needless to say, it hit him really hard. He wasn’t able to put his Business back on track for a long time. Then, someone suggested him to meditate daily and he began the practice religiously. Slowly things started to fall into place and everything’s great now.

I’m not saying that meditation makes you successful in business, it’s just that it helps to make things right every time they go wrong. So, it’s not that Mark doesn’t face difficulties now, he has just become better at dealing with stuff. In brief, business remains business, your perspective is what changes with meditation. This is why you are able handle a situation more courageously and confidently.

In this post, I am going to talk about the benefits that you can reap as an entrepreneur by Meditating. -

Meditation has great healing power

Studies show that you can reduce depression to a great extent, by meditating regularly. According to Johns Hopkins research, meditating for nearly half an hour daily can help to deal with anxiety and depression. As per Madhav Goyal, M.D., M.P.H., Assistant Professor Division of General Internal Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who led the study, “A lot of people use meditation, but it’s not a practice considered part of mainstream medical therapy for anything”.

He further added, “But in our study, meditation appeared to provide as much relief from some anxiety and depression symptoms as what other studies have found from antidepressants”.

It improves focus and productivity

According to a research carried out by David Levy, a computer scientist and Professor with the Information School at the University of Washington, it was found that meditation improves focus at work. As per what David said, “Meditation increases attention span and you are less likely to get distracted.” He also suggested a simple step for new meditators.

“The simplest form of mindfulness meditation I know is to just to sit and pay attention to your breathing”, he said. “To feel the actual sensations of your breathing and when you mind inevitably goes away to something else … just bring your mind back. Bring it back to the sensation of the breath again and again. It really can make a difference in your life”, David added.

Helpful in keeping stress at bay

As an entrepreneur, you regularly have to cope up with difficult situations. You have the responsibility of managing time and cash flow, hiring new employees, growing business and many other things. The pressure of handling all these responsibilities can easily lead to piling up of stress. This is where a few minutes of meditation can prove to be a boon for you. According to one of the studies conducted by a team of Carnegie Mellon researchers, published in the The Official Journal of Psychoneuroendocrinology, 25 minutes of daily meditation can assist in tackling stressful situations.

In one of the other studies carried out at the Georgetown University Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry it was suggested that meditation supports reduction in the levels of stress hormones. . Dr Elizabeth Hoge, Associate Professor in the Department, , who led this research, said, “Mindfulness meditation training is a relatively inexpensive and low-stigma treatment approach, and these findings strengthen the case that it can improve resilience to stress”.

Before concluding the article, I would like to share the names of some successful entrepreneurs who have embraced meditation and have openly showed their love for it -

  • Oprah Winfrey

Who doesn’t know about this powerful woman. Oprah is not only one of the most popular faces in the media, but also among the most powerful personalities in the world. She meditates for nearly 20 minutes once or twice a day.

  • Arianna Huffington

Arianna, who founded Huffington Post, started meditating when she was a teenager. Although after entering adulthood she left the practice owing to shortage of time, she started meditating again. As per Arianna, meditation has played a major role in her success.

  • Russell Simmons

The co-founder and CEO of Def Jam, Simmons, gives the credit of clear thinking, creativity, better focus and happiness to meditation. “No tool has made me a smarter, more focused and clearer thinking entrepreneur than meditation”, says Russell.

So, what are you thinking? You have got a great way to deal with problems in your business and personal life, both. Getting the best out of you is your decision!
