Case Study | Live News App

An Innovative Mobile App for Live News

OUR CLIENT

For confidentiality purposes, we will not disclose the name of our client, which is a private leading television channel. Its main programming includes the local news and morning shows, latin american soap operas, US dubbed series, and sports shows.

THE CHALLENGE

Our client wished to have a Mobile application for live news and information, where news are updated with a high frequency, and interaction with the user is allowed.

OUR ACTION

We built an efficient native, high-traffic app for iOS and Android. The main purpose is that people can properly use it while on the street, so we developed an app that transfers little amount of data so that is easily achieved.

The app has a list of sections including:

  • News (in the form of articles)
  • Lifestyle
  • Entertainment (TV, movies, etc.)
  • Services, which comprises (i) the weather (current and extended forecast per city), (ii) traffic information, (iii) seismic information, (iv) financial indicators (US dollar and Euro exchange rate, oil price)
  • Programming Guide
  • Live (to watch the TV channel)
  • Sports (particularly focused on football information such as the league’s fixture, positions, lineup, etc.)
  • “My Report” where users can report news though pictures and/or videos in real time.

It also has the following features and functionalities:

  • It provides in-depth information about the TV channel and its services and programming.
  • The app consumes Json formatted contents provided by a static backend managed by our client. In addition, the “Sports” section is populated through an XML data factory.
  • The news articles are divided into different sections, including highlighted news. They are listed as a feed with endless scrolling in order to display historical news.
  • The content of the articles may include images, audios, videos and html formatted text.
  • All of them can be shared via Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.
  • The service platform used to manage the “Sign In” functionality was developed with PHP.
  • The application also supports Log In via Facebook or Twitter using their API.

TECHNOLOGIES

  • iOS. Objective C
  • Android. Java
  • Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn frameworks
  • XML, Json, and Bitly Api
  • Cocoa Pod
