Training Program Managers across continents with kPoint

Shailendra Singh, Program Manager at Sterlite Technologies talks about how Sterlite used video to digitize its training and create a strong knowledge base for current and aspiring program managers.

In 2017, Sterlite Technologies was struggling to build a credible knowledge base across the board. Geography was one of Sterlite’s biggest challenges: spread out across continents and cultures, the company had many perspectives to consider before embarking on any Training initiative. This meant that any training they had was in person, expensive, time-consuming, and restricted to their plants in India.

With its many years of international presence, Sterlite had accumulated a vast knowledge base — but was left without a way to make this knowledge accessible to its employees. Best practices from top leadership, for example, were being shared on laptops and archives, but there was no way to tell who was reading and truly comprehending the content.

This situation spelt particular trouble for Program managers. Programs drove strategic initiatives, but there was a lack of awareness as to what Program Management entailed. For a company running close to 47 strategic programs across the board, it was a big risk to train program managers without any formal methodology.

As this struggle became more apparent, the idea of Program Management training came into the picture. Wanting to bring in a digital mode of training, Program Manager Shailendra Singh has a simple explanation as to why they chose to work with kPoint Technologies: the kPoint team understood Sterlite’s needs the best.

With kPoint on board, Sterlite prepared their training content to suit their training needs. To make sure that their training remained engaging and relevant, Sterlite had members of the executive committee speak in the modules, often introducing or recapping sessions. Every single example was customized to Sterlite’s context and needs.

kPoint’s easy functionality was one of Sterlite’s biggest assets in this process. kPoint’s intuitive user interface meant that the platform was easy to navigate for both trainers and learners. The self-test module was a particular highlight, as was the single sign-on feature — these little things came together to make kPoint’s user experience a superior one.

For Sterlite Technologies, a company with a $2bn market cap, the effects of this new digital training program were impressive. More than 200 employees have completed their training, and 700 more are at various levels of the program. kPoint’s easy digitizing of their content meant that every employee could learn at their own pace.

The training initiative has also helped propagate a formal Program Management training methodology. The results were immediate: across departments, functions and geographical locations, employees began to ask similar questions and understand their functions in similar ways.

With digitization through video, Sterlite Technologies has achieved a large-scale and successful standardization of their training content — a big step towards meeting its strategic objectives.
