Homemade low sugar treats your kids will love

This content was created by Holland and Barrett UAE

Most children love chocolate and sweets, yet indulging in sugary snacks can be problematic for their teeth and wider health. Instead, why not make a few healthy and delicious low sugar treats in your own kitchen?  They don’t take long to make and the kids will love joining in!

Read on for three of our favourite recipes you can turn into a family activity.

Blueberry Bunny Fudge

Fruity fudge is definitely something you should try, so here’s a quick and easy recipe to have a go at. Precise measurements aren’t really necessary, so play around with it until you’ve got the flavour just right.

 Ingredients

  • 2 cups of coconut oil
  • 1 cup of nut or seed butter (your options here are really endless so have a go with almond butter or pumpkin seed butter and see how you get on)
  • ½ cup of liquid or granulated sweetener
  • 2 tablespoons of vanilla
  • One dash of salt
  • 1 cup of blueberries (throw in a little more if you want a fruitier taste. They will also give your fudge an interesting purple colour)
  • Creative cookie cutters – a necessity!

How to make it

  1. Melt the coconut oil over the hob and then blend with all the other ingredients until it becomes smooth.
  2. Pour into a deep baking tray. Naturally, the bigger the tray the thinner your fudge will be so keep that in mind if you’re looking for nice thick slices.
  3. Freeze until solid, before storing in the fridge.
  4. Now it’s time to get creative: If you’re really bold, try swapping out the blueberries in the recipe for ½ cup of dried parsley flakes or a sprinkling of beetroot powder to make your fudge really pop!

Chocolate Nutballs

Totally delicious and healthy too, these low sugar chocolate nutballs are tasty and super easy to make.

 Ingredients

  • 250 grams of nuts
  • ½ jar of almond butter
  • ½ cup of raw cacao powder
  • A couple of handfuls of shredded coconut
  • 100g of salted butter
  • 5 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • Flavouring: Try vanilla essence or cinnamon. A great sugar-free chocolate alternative is organic cacao nibs
  • Throw in some organic maca powder to adjust consistency when needed

 How to make them

  1. Once you’ve got all your ingredients together, simply throw them all in a bowl and mash them all together with a spoon. The coconut oil will make it slightly wet so mix in the maca powder for consistency.
  2. Blend it all together until you’re happy and can make them into little balls.
  3. Finally, put them onto wax paper on a metal tray and leave in the fridge to set for about an hour.

Peanut Butter Animals

This is another simple, healthy little recipe to ease those sugar cravings.

 Ingredients

  • 1 cup of peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon of liquid stevia
  • 1 cup of chocolate drops
  • Moulds

 How to make them

  1. Melt the peanut butter and coconut oil together, either in a bowl over hot water, or in the microwave.
  2. Stir in the stevia and vanilla extract. Mix all of this together well before pouring into your chosen moulds.
  3. Freeze the mix for one hour before taking your new little peanut butter animals out of the moulds.
  4. Now it’s time to make that yummy chocolate coating. Melt those chocolate chips and another two tablespoons of coconut oil in the microwave, or in a bowl over hot water, and stir together.
  5. It’s really up to you, what you do next. Dip the peanut butter animals in your chocolatey mix to get them all covered up or spread the chocolate mix over your animals with a spoon.
  6. And just like that you’re done! Enjoy straight away or store in the fridge.
