Myth behind birth of Lord Ganesha

As we all know  that Lord Ganesha is the son  Lord Shiva And Parvati.  Goddess Parvati made Ganesha from sandalwood paste so that he could guard her bath door in absence of Lord Shiva. Once Ganesha did not allowed Lord Shiva to enter , then Lord Shiva Beheaded his son-Ganesha. Goddess Parvati order her followers to find the head of a child, but they found an elephant head. This is how Lord Ganesha was manifested as Elephant- headed Lord.

Celebration of the festival

Lord Ganesha is marked as Lord of new beginning. The festival is celebrated in mid of august and September (month of Bhadra). All around the country, this festival is grandly celebrated in South India especially in Maharastra. The festival is celebrated for 10-12 days. People bring big Lord Ganesha Idols made of clay to their houses. Usually People wear traditional clothes .They worship the idol for 10 days and 11th day, the procession of Lord ganesha is conducted in streets. People are seem to chant “ganpati bappa moray”, they sing and dance around the Ganesha Idol.

The idol of Lord Ganesha is then immersed in river or sea in hope that it will come back to them in next year again and bring lot of goodness and wealth.

Festival and Sweet dishes

A festival without sweets are felt as incomplete. Every festival has its speciality and the most delicious and famous dish of this festival is Modak. Modak is favorite dish of Lord Ganesha. A modak is a stuffed with coconut and dry fruits and is usually made from rice or wheat flour. People used to make Modak and many other sweet dishes on this festival and serve it as Parshad after worshiping Lord Ganesha in the festival time period of 10 days.  The another famous sweet is Karanji. It tastes similar to modak but is different in look and shape. People used to prepare these sweets in this festival.

Diversity in Ganesha Idols

We see variety of Lord Ganesha Idols while we buy and bring Ganesha Idol to our house. Lord Ganesha has a number of names and phases.The fact behind this is every Lord Ganesha idol is symbol of some unique auspicious value.

  1. Bal Ganesha: Bal Ganesha mark the presence of child Ganesha having elephant face and four hands. Bal Ganesha symbol is believed to save the earth from sin.
  2. Durga Ganpati: This phase of Ganesha depicts of paying to Goddess Durga. This Idol has eight hands holding an arrow, a bow , prayer heads and other things.
  3. Ekadanti Ganapati: In this phase, Lord Ganesha has a single tusk and a large belly which represents that all universe is within him.
  4. Dvimukha ganapati: This is a Ganesha phase having two faces and see in all directions and has a jewelled crown that graces its head.
  5. Maha Ganapati: The Maha Ganapati or Great Ganapati is the most worshipped idol and has 10 hands.

Apart from these above idols there are many more having different look and represents different auspicious values. You can find Lord Ganesha in almost all Hindu temples. He is the most worshipped among all Gods.
