What To Look For In Infant Car Seats – An Awesome Guide

Let’s face it, babies…especially infants are very small and very special. When you’re looking to buy a car seat for any baby size you need to make sure you pick the right one and that’s its super safe. This is to ensure the infant is safe and secure when your going on all those road trips. Today, we want to look at infant Car Seats and some things associated with them… let’s begin.

The first thing your going to need to be aware of is this. Not all the car seats are going to be made the same or provide the same features. You really need to research and find out what works best for the infant (check out our 10 best car seats guide here). Of course being safe and secure is one of the top priorities.

Moving on…..

So there are many different types of Infant Car Seats. They are :-

  • Detachable car seats.
  • Rear Facing.
  • Bigger weight and Sizes.

Infant car seats have been designed differently to say toddler car seats. Because obviously infants tend to be much smaller, they need some extra support and stuff like that. For example an Infant Car seat can be detachable at the base, which makes moving it out of the car that much easier…. this works for when the infant is asleep.

For bigger car seats the whole car seat has to come out and then if the baby is sleeping there is more disturbance and then more chance of waking the baby (NOT FUN). They also have extra side and head supports and this type of car seats are always rear facing because this is required by law and greatly reduces injury in a car crash.

Moving on…..

You next need to know about the seat construction. As many car seats will again be made differently. They are made from:-

  • Hard shell.
  • Hard foam.
  • Soft foam.
  • Extra padding.

Most car seats are constructed from the base of a hard shell, this is pretty obvious and then they have different layers of padding or foam. You will also be able to find some seats have extra padding avaible and these can be added onto the car seat.

The outer shell is there to form a protection structure and house the foam. They do a really good job of absorbing the impact and in crash tests these shells really do stand up well to trauma. The foam varies in degrees of hardness and especially for smaller babies, they have designed the foam areas with a lot more comfort, because of the more precious bodies.

Hard foam makes up most of the seat and then there is softer foam in the head area for example. This is good because in the event of an accident all these things matter.

Here are some more things to consider:-

  1. What type of crash testing has been done?
  2. How does the car seat anchor itself in the car?
  3. Does the car seat have good height adjustment?
  4. Weight of the seat?

There you go some good information about infant car seats and this applies to bigger car seats as well. Thanks for tuning in! Be sure to check out our other how to articles.
