Free SEO audit tools for small businesses

As you might have figured out by now I’m writing a small business SEO guide to help you guys get more organic traffic from Google. By the way, if you haven’t submitted your questions yet, feel free to comment in here and I’ll answer them in my guide.

This post will help a small business owner to the following three things:

  1. quickly audit the website,
  2. audit the website for free,
  3. create an SEO todo list.

Knowing where you are and what you need to do to get better is probably the most important things you need to know to improve your website rankings. Let me share my favourite free SEO audit tools that can both help a small business owner as well as a seasoned SEO consultant.

By no means this is an exhaustive list, but these are simple enough tools that I use on regular basis for a quick Seo Audit of my clients’ websites. There are plenty of other more complicated and paid website audit tools and processes. However, this articles is talking about DIY Free Seo Audit that you can do right now and start improving your rankings right away.

SEOptimizer

This is a quick and Free Seo audit tool that I use quite often. Go here, enter your website address (either homepage or an internal page on your website) and click Analyze. The output will be a mix of generic and somewhat technical data. What I like the most about this tool is that if gives the you a list of the most important things to focus on while optimizing your site.

If you scroll down the details may be a bit too much, but SEOptimizer has an option to download the PDF doc of this report. Get this download and send it to your SEO consultant or just use it for your records.

Marketing Grader

This one is very end-user oriented. Good thing is that you won’t see a lot of complicated technical SEO details and notes will be easy to understand for a 6-grader that knows nothing about SEO. Bad thing is that they’ll require your email address to output the report, which is likely to follow by regular communications from HubSpot (I have nothing against them, just warning you).

Another good thing about this website audit tool is that it splits the recommendations in very logical areas like blogging, social media, SEO, lead generation and mobile. Each report area gives you specific recommendations on what you need to do to improve.

On the negative side, I haven’t been able to export my reports. I like export functionality because you can take a snapshot of your site in time and compare results when you improved the website.

Of course they will offer HubSpot to fix all your digital marketing needs, but I guess this is the part of the free website audit deal. I still highly recommend the tool.

QuickSprout

Finally, my favourite one – QuickSprout. To be honest I just discovered it, ran a couple of reports and fell in love with this SEO audit tool. It’s user-friendly, talks about the important stuff. What sets this tool apart from the other two is that you can add 3 competing website to see how you measure against them.

QuickSprout has great exporting functionality: offers 3 PDF reports (website, social, competition) and 1 Excel with detailed data split into tags for future manipulation.

On the minus side, the reports are quite big (over 2 MB each, except for the Excel) and some may prefer a small file size. Other than that, the reports (both on-site and in PDFs) are well designed and contain all the modern important data. As I already mentioned, this one takes the cake!

In conclusion

SEO is not about tools. SEO is about marketing: knowing your target audience, knowing how search engines work, and ensuring that your site is in a friendly relationship with them. Feel free to use all of these tools and then combine the results into a bigger todo list. You can tackle it on your own or approach an SEO professional to help you with that.
