Children dress up as freedom fighters as they celebrate Independence Day

Ahmedabad, 12th August 2016: “We are Indians, bold and free! We are Indians, we love our country! We will guard it and keep it free. We salute our flag with pride, Jai Hind! Jai Hind! Jai Hind!” These words echoed the classrooms of Sesame Street Preschool at Shivranjani Cross Road, Ahmedabad as kids dressed as freedom fighters celebrated Independence Day with full enthusiasm. Kids sang and danced on patriotic songs and recited the National Anthem. Teachers apprised them about the significance of Independence Day and the national symbols like the national flower, bird, animal, etc. The school premises was decorated with tricolour balloons, rangoli and flags which further raised the patriotic spirits of the kids.

Mona Singh, Vice President, Sesame Schoolhouse, shares, “Kids born in the 21st century are often unable to visualise and imagine how the struggle for freedom would have been. It’s crucial that we introduce them to the independence struggle and the freedom fighters who sacrificed their life so that we can breathe in a free India. We at Sesame Street Preschool have always encouraged kids to be aware of the glorious history that India boasts of and such celebrations are a way to bring them closer to the Indian culture and history.”

At Sesame Street Preschool education goes beyond ABCs and 123s, aiming to instil the skills of ideation, confidence, communication and collaboration – skills that are needed not just for school but for life. Such special celebrations allow each child to foster imagination, creativity, communication and collaboration. As the Independence Day celebrations progressed, kids were heard talking to each other about the tricolour and the national symbols. They even narrated stories that they had heard from their grandparents about India’s independence.

Sesame Street Preschool is currently present across 21 cities in India including Delhi, Ahmedabad, Surat, Jammu, Patna, Meerut, Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Pune, Bengaluru, Udaipur, Jaipur and Navi Mumbai offering preschool programmes for 1 to 6 year olds including Beginners (Parent- Toddler Programme), Playgroup, Nursery, Prep I and Prep II programmes. Furthermore, the preschools provide a set of after school programmes inculcating critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills. Few centres also provide extended day care facilities which help in the child’s social and emotional growth in a fun-filled and supervised environment.
