With majority in Parishad SP may spoil the GST party in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow;  A special week-long  session of two houses of state legislature has been called by the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh  mainly to ratify the Goods and Services Tax or GST Act which is scheduled to be introduced from first of July next.

The task, however, will not be easy if the Samajwadi Party, the main opposition, decides to act against the interest of the ruling party.
The government can take it easy in the Vidhan Sabha as  it  has got two-thirds majority in the lower House. It will have a tough time in the Upper House is the main opposition does not support the government on the issue.
In the 100-member Vidhan Parishad the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has only eight members. The number if far less than required for the ratification.
With 66 members the SP is in a commanding position. The ruling party, however, hopes that as it did in parliament it will support the BJP in UP Upper House on the GST.
The difference is that it was former party chief Mulayajm Singh Yadav who had come to the rescue of the party  in parliament. He is no more the  party head . The new incumbent Akhilesh Yadav has no love lost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He may behave differently. So far he has kept the option close to his chest.
Though it is too early to come to any conclusion but even if he decides to go against the ruling party it will not make much material difference. The Act has to be ratified by half of the states and the BJP rules in 13 out of 30.  Bihar  has already backed it. So, it needs only two more states to sail through  which may not be difficult, given the current mood of the people in the country and Modi charisma.
