The much anticipated Bali holidays will never be complete without savoring the province’s strange yet famous delicacies. Boasting one of the most notable cuisines in Indonesia and in Asia, the world-renowned destination of Bali serves a menu of strange foods that will interest anyone’s appetite. Hence, aside from the main spiced vegetables and meat served with rice, try some of these native Bali food as well:
1. Lawar
Lawar is a mixture of vegetables, coconuts, minced meat (chicken, pork, beef, turtle, or dragonfly) tossed with herbs and spices, such as kunyit and shrimp paste. Commonly, the raw blood of a pig is also included in the recipe, giving a bright red tint and a unique taste to the Dish.
2. Bebek Betutu
A staple dish in the menu of Bali hotels and restaurants, Bebek Betutu is a variant of Balinese roast duck. Considered as a dish made for special celebrations, this strange food in Bali is seasoned with garlic, onion, ginger, black pepper, and coconut oil. In Gianyar, Bebek Betutu is prepared with plantain-leaf wrapping.
3. Babi Guling
This is the locale’s version of a roast suckling pig. In cooking Babi Guling, the whole pig is stuffed with chili, lemongrass, kaffir, and turmeric, then put atop an open fire that uses wood and coconut husks. Other varieties of Balinese roasted pork are Babi Panggang and Babi Bakar.
4. Buah Keluak
This dish comes from the seed of kepayang tree. The seed is considered poisonous when raw, but Balinese cook it and put it into a curry to make a delectable Asian truffle.
5. Jaja Batun Bedil
Jaja Batun Bedil is a “dumpling” made of glutinous rice and tapioca flour served with a sauce made with coconut milk and palm sugar. The creamy texture and delightful flavor of this sticky rice cake is truly mouthwatering.
6. Deep-fried Dragonflies
This is a popular and bizarre snack in the island. This tasty insect treat can be purchased in several food stalls along the streets of Bali.
7. Sago Worms
Balinese consider Sago Worms as a delightful treat that gives a pulpy feeling when chewed. They are usually prepared roasted or in a stew.
8. Bats
Prepared deep-fried or grilled, Balinese people eat bats whole—with the bones and everything. Another preparation is cutting them into pieces and putting them in a stew or soup.
