Finding Office Work Space When Traveling

If you’re a business traveler who often has downtime between meetings, you know what it’s like trying to find a quiet work-space, especially if you’re in an unfamiliar place.

Sure, there are the obvious options: restaurants, coffee shops, hotel lobbies and airport lounges if you’re waiting for a flight. But what about some of the less obvious places that might be less crowded, where you can stay as long as you want and not have to worry about someone waiting for your seat?

Work Space options

Public libraries are a great place to get work done. They usually have plenty of easily accessible outlets so you can keep your phone and other devices charged, as well lots of table space if you need to spread out. And they often have printers available for public use.

Plus, the enforced quiet rule means you know the person sitting next to you won’t be having a conversation while you’re trying to work.

The New York Public Library even has cafes at two locations where you can get a sandwich or cup of coffee while you’re working. And of course, if you have a research question, you’re in the right spot.

Museum cafes are another spot to check out. They’re likely to be less crowded and quieter than a coffee shop, especially if you’re there in the middle of the week.

Some have street-level entrances that allow you to use the facility without going into the galleries, a concern if you have a bag that you don’t want to check. But remember that these days, many museums allow you to bring in a tablet-size computer.

In fact, they often have an app designed for a tablet. When you’re ready to take a break from work, you can use it as a guide to spend some time browsing through the exhibits and clear your head before your next appointment.

Sometimes when you’re working on a report or presentation, a change of scenery is refreshing. It can help you look at the material in a new way.

Many cities have beautifully landscaped parks and on a sunny day, working outside for a little while can be a great change of pace.

Of course, there are times when you need your Office away from to home to resemble something more like, well, an office.

Shared Work Space

For those times, look for a co-work-space. These shared spaces have cropped up in most big cities across the United States and around the world.

While many have monthly rates that include a variety of plans, from a seat at a common desk to a private office, other services provide office space or conference rooms that can be rented for any length of time, whether it’s for a client presentation or an entire day of work.

Some even offer flat-screen TVs, kitchenettes, and lounges for breakout sessions or when you need to take a break.
