Common Questions about Die and Wafer Banking at EDX

Our Critical Inventory Storage Solutions here at EDX take many forms. All inventory is different, as are the specifications of each individual client, and as a result, no two customized solutions will be exactly alike. Instead of offering a one-size-fits-all model, we have incorporated a variety of innovative features that allow us to craft a custom solution that matches our customers’ needs perfectly.

As those needs have evolved over the years, we have continued to introduce new wrinkles in our portfolio to stay two steps ahead of our rapidly evolving industry. Our ability to offer die and Wafer Banking capabilities is just the latest of these.

Below, we have compiled a brief list of some of the most common questions we receive regarding die and Wafer Banking. If your question isn’t answered here, please don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our supply chain strategists at [email protected]. We’re here to help!

What is die and wafer banking?

Die and wafer banking refers to the process of storing certain electronic components, including custom-designed ASICs, in their raw form until needed for assembly. In this state, they can be stored for many years, making their use particularly ideal for OEM products with extended life cycles. Many manufacturers are adopting this strategy as a check against obsolescence, as this method of storage is far more cost-efficient long-term than traditional climate-controlled warehousing. To do so, however, requires highly-specialized equipment and storage procedures to combat against die and wafer’s sensitivity to moisture and electrostatic discharge (ESD). That’s where we come in!

What are the advantages of banking with EDX instead of within my own company?

The largest hurdle facing many manufacturers, especially ones that operate in a smaller market, is the high cost of entry required to invest in die and wafer banking. To do so often requires a significant sacrifice of on-hand working capital, which could be used to address higher priorities such as hiring or new product development. Our Critical Inventory Storage Solution is designed to give manufacturers access to the latest market innovations without compromise.

How much does it cost?

The cost of die and wafer banking through EDX is dependent on the variables established by the client, which include the quantity of inventory, the fulfillment schedule, and the length of time our services are required. While this makes it difficult to cite a fixed cost of our service, our customers have been proven to save a significant amount of money banking through EDX compared to using their own infrastructure and administrative costs, while protecting downstream revenues. What equipment do you use?

We’re glad you asked! EDX is proud to offer customers the latest in die and wafer banking innovation in the form of our desiccant ECD storage cabinets. Utilizing SmartDRY technology, these cabinets are infused with a volcanic compound called zeolite that can maintain a relative humidity of 0.5 percent, while also allowing for an industry-leading recovery time of less than three minutes. Such a rapid recovery time allows trained EDX assembly specialists to access your inventory up to 10-12 times per hour! On top of that, all our cabinets are located within our custom storage vault, which has been rated as “best in class” for electronic component storage with unrivaled business continuity. Are there any benefits to zeolite compared to nitrogen?

If you have any previous knowledge of die and wafer banking, then you know that traditional dry storage cabinets have used nitrogen to maintain suitable humidity levels. Nitrogen, however, is only capable of maintaining a relative humidity of 6-10 percent. Not only that, but the recovery time of a nitrogen-infused cabinet only allows you to access inventory 2-3 times per hour, which can significantly affect tight production deadlines. In every respect, zeolite is a far superior material for die and wafer banking.

How long can you store die and wafer on a customer’s behalf?

As long as you wish! One of the greatest benefits of banking components in raw die and wafer form is the peace of mind knowing that you have secured inventory for even the longest of product life cycles. Offering anything less than limitless storage would strip die and wafer banking of one of its defining features. There’s also no limit in terms of quantity. No matter how much inventory you need or how long you need it, our solutions are for you.

Do you have any certifications?

Yes! All our processes are ISO:9001-certified through TÜV SÜD America.
